Marvel’s Wolverine Game Has Another PS5 Competitor (And It’s Not What You Think)

Marvel has just announced that their Wolverine game will be released on September 15, 2026, right at the start of the fall season. Players will finally be able to play as Wolverine and use his adamantium claws then. However, it won’t be the only major game launching that month – another big action-adventure title is also expected around the same time, which could create some competition.

Both games launching in September 2026 are only available on PlayStation 5 and use Unreal Engine 5 for stunning graphics. While this might excite Sony fans, it unfortunately creates a difficult choice between two great titles, as the audience is limited. Luckily, there’s a bit of time between the release of Marvel’s Wolverine and the other game, giving players a chance to enjoy both if they wish.

Marvel’s Wolverine Releases One Week After Phantom Blade Zero In September 2026

Launching on September 8, 2026, just before Marvel’s Wolverine, Phantom Blade Zero is a fast-paced action game for the PS5. It blends the storytelling style of Wuxia films with the exciting, visually stunning combat of movies like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Like Wolverine, players will engage in intense, hack-and-slash battles against numerous enemies, experiencing smooth and dynamic combat throughout the game.

Phantom Blade Zero is an action-adventure game with gameplay reminiscent of the Devil May Cry series. Players explore a mysterious world filled with secrets and can choose from 30 different “Phantom Blade” weapons to customize their combat experience. The game combines elements of folk horror and classic fantasy to create a compelling and rewarding world to explore, alongside its exciting action sequences.

Phantom Blade Zero’s Hack-and-Slash Action Has Some Similarities To Wolverine’s Brutality

While we haven’t seen much gameplay footage of Marvel’s Wolverine yet, the initial trailer gives us a glimpse of how combat will work. Like Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man, Wolverine appears to rely on combos and special moves to defeat enemies. However, Wolverine is much more violent, with brutal finishing moves and plenty of blood shown after each attack. It’s clear this game won’t hold back on showcasing Wolverine’s ferocity.

Like other games in the series, Phantom Blade Zero rewards players for using fast-paced and stylish attack combos. Battles are more engaging thanks to detailed moves and a wider range of combat options. Defeating enemies is especially satisfying with dramatic finishing moves, and you’ll be able to test your abilities against many foes, including challenging bosses and large groups of enemies. The game doesn’t hold back on giving you plenty of weapons, techniques, and skills to master.

As a fan, what really excites me about both Phantom Blade Zero and Marvel’s Wolverine is how incredibly detailed the combat looks. It’s clearly designed to make every fight feel intense, thrilling, and really pull you into the game world. Both titles are drawing on fantastic sources – the rich folklore of Phantom Blade Zero and the iconic locations from the Marvel comics in Wolverine – and using them to create huge, immersive environments. Whether I’m imagining training in an ancient temple in Phantom Blade Zero or battling through the crowded streets of Madripoor in Wolverine, it sounds like the settings will be just as memorable as the action itself.

Players May Have A Month Full Of Action Gaming Ahead Of Them This Year

Both Phantom Blade Zero and Marvel’s Wolverine, launching in September 2026, are exciting news for action game fans, particularly with a shortage of new releases this year. Since we haven’t heard much about other major action series, these games are ideal for PS5 players seeking fresh adventures. While they’re both coming out relatively close together, there’s enough time between releases to enjoy both titles, though some players may have to choose which to play first.

Players burned out on action RPGs like those in the Dark Souls series – a trend that really took off with Elden Ring – might find these games refreshing. If you were let down by Black Myth: Wukong, Phantom Blade Zero’s fast-paced combat, which emphasizes precise timing and blocking, could be more your speed. And if you didn’t quite enjoy Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Marvel’s Wolverine promises a very different experience, shifting away from open-world exploration to a darker, more focused story.

Even though we haven’t heard about new Devil May Cry or Bayonetta games recently, there are still plenty of exciting action titles on the way. With games like Marvel’s Wolverine and Phantom Blade Zero both launching in September 2026, PS5 players can look forward to a jam-packed month of action-packed gameplay.

Once Phantom Blade Zero and Marvel’s Wolverine are released, which game are you planning to play first? Let us know in the comments, or discuss it with other fans in the ComicBook Forum!
