Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen's Halloween Movie Is Still Bats--t Crazy

As a die-hard fan of Halloween and all things spooky, I simply cannot contain my excitement over this enchanting tale! It’s like a perfect blend of Hocus Pocus and The Goonies, with a pinch of Stranger Things for good measure.

Thirty-one years ago, Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen brewed up Double, Double Toil and Trouble.

At that point, the twin siblings who were just 7 years old had already made their fortunes independently. They kick-started their careers at the tender age of 8 months by playing Michelle Tanner on the TV show Full House. Rapidly expanding their influence, Mary-Kate and Ashley soon transformed into fashion designers and established their own company Dualstar. This enterprise eventually produced all their direct-to-VHS movies, including classics like Double, Double Toil and Trouble.

The TV movie named “Double, Double Toil and Trouble” originally aired on ABC on October 30, 1993. Despite being somewhat underrated as a Halloween film, it remains popular among the dedicated fanbase of the Olsen twins. However, this movie is rich in ’90s nostalgia and unexpected moments, with Eric McCormack, who was previously unaware of the film, among its cast.

As Halloween is nearly here, let’s bring up those nostalgic memories of “Double, Double Toil and Trouble”…once more!

It’s no surprise that the film’s title is directly lifted from Act IV, Scene 1 of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

2. “On Halloween night, two clever children work to rescue their parents from the tight-fisted grip of their mean-spirited capitalist aunt. As magic unfolds, they encounter unusual companions on their journey.

3. It’s revealed that the “grumpy capitalist aunt” is none other than Aunt Agatha, who secretly practices witchcraft (and has a soft spot for wealth). Cloris Leachman devours every bit of scenery and even more for dessert as both Aunt Agatha and Aunt Sophia, the “nice” twin who is a witch trapped in a mirror. An interesting tidbit: The original author of Hocus Pocus had Cloris Leachman in mind when creating the role of Winifred Sanderson, but Bette Midler ultimately landed the part, delivering an unforgettable performance in the film that debuted in 1993.

4. Eric McCormack, before his “Will & Grace” fame, plays the father of Kelly (Mary-Kate) and Lynn (Ashley), marking the beginning of a long line of attractive fictional dads portrayed by him and others like Tom Amandes, Steve Guttenberg, Matt McCoy, who became future heartthrobs in the Olsen twins’ shows.

5. The film opens with the twins going to a Halloween party and witnessing a magical performance by Oscar the Clown (Phil Fondacaro). Not a single child was scared during the clown’s act, which raises suspicion.

6. After Kelly and Lynn’s parents depart for Aunt Agatha’s house to obtain a loan to save their home, they neglect their 7-year-old children by leaving them alone in the car. For clarification: two young girls of 7 years old were left unsupervised in the vehicle. (As soon as they leave, Lynn swiftly moves to the driver’s seat, mimicking driving behavior.)

7. Later on, the girls encounter their second new acquaintance, a man known as Gravedigger (Wayne Robson)). Indeed, this is his official character name, and he was in the process of digging a grave when he crossed paths with the twins, finding them somewhat eerie.

8. During Gravedigger’s story about Agatha and Sophia, and the magical moonstone, there are scenes showing the Olsen twins portraying the youthful forms of Leachman’s characters. To this day, their wigs from that time continue to be memorable.

9. “Mom, when I get older, can I get a nose job?” A question a 7-year-old calmly asked her parents.

10. The twins embark on their journey, initially dressed in dubious attire (later exchanging these costumes with another pair to sneak away undetected and start their adventure).

11. Agatha stores her valuable cash in an actual bag, and every note is a single bill. It seems like that’s how the wealthy keep their money, isn’t it? Could anyone who fits this description kindly share their insights?

12. Encountering Companion Number Three: none other than Mr. N (portrayed by the late Meshach Taylor, famously known for his role in Designing Women). Mr. N, often referred to as Plato Naufzagger, is a fellow resident of our town’s bridge and joins the girls after catching wind of the moonstone, a gem that could fetch a small fortune. Initially, he plots to pilfer a moonstone from two little girls, but eventually discovers true friendship outweighs any monetary value.

13. In the latest development, the trio chooses to consult Madame Lulu, a psychic. Through this encounter, it’s revealed that Mr. N isn’t truly British – he maintains a false accent throughout the movie – and it turns out that the medium is not from Romania as assumed, but hails from Brooklyn instead. The truth unfolds.

14. The 1993 graphics and special effects were also really something.

15. By chance, Mr. N’s shoe has the word “SOLE” written on its underside, visible when he, Lynn, and Kelly hop onto the bed of a pumpkin truck. As they travel, the girls amusingly croon “I know a song that drives everyone crazy,” a tune they undoubtedly sang backstage too.

16. Following a significant pumpkin collision, Mr. N and the girls serendipitously discover a miniature house nestled deep within the woods, which could easily be showcased on HGTV. (Despite being house No. 3, there are no other residences nearby, nor any streets—a puzzling situation.) This is where we encounter Oscar, having shed his clown costume and makeup, who decides to participate in their journey upon learning the intriguing tale of the witch, without raising any objections or queries.

17. As she prepared for the yearly witch convention, Agatha accidentally transformed her whole head of hair into black with a tube of mascara, making one wonder why she didn’t simply use her magic for the task instead! (Just a friendly suggestion…)

18. It’s worth mentioning that the moonstone used as a prop is green, symbolizing feminine energy. Known for its protective qualities towards women and children, it encourages emotional equilibrium, self-love, and even alleviates menstrual discomfort. (We’d be delighted to have some of these!)

19. Following the group’s moonstone theft (orchestrated by having Oscar perch on Mr. N’s shoulders, pretending to be a formidable figure who could double its potency if Agatha surrendered it), the witches pursue them, and one lagging behind exclaims, “I’m walking in heels here!” However, she is actually not wearing heels.

20 hours after their children had changed costumes and dashed off to join a witches’ gathering in search of a moonstone to save their home from foreclosure (nothing out of the ordinary), the parents suddenly realize that Kelly and Lynn are missing. When they approach the police, the officer appears remarkably nonchalant about the disappearance of two 7-year-old twins, advising them to simply retrace their trick-or-treating route and return after 24 hours to formally file a Missing Persons report.

21. Alright, get ready as Gravedigger makes his entrance, finding himself residing in a billboard directly over the witches’ meeting. Bear in mind, there was only 90 minutes for the entire story, so some parts had to be streamlined. So, let’s just roll with it.

22. Following Lynn’s abduction by Agatha, the group returns to her house with the moonstone, intending to rescue Aunt Sophia. However, only a single window at the top of the house is open, leaving them with no other option: Inflate every balloon that Oscar carries in his clown car and use them for an ascent, flying him directly up there.

23. Owing to the potent bond of twin affection, Kelly and Lynn manage to liberate Sophia from the mirror and send Agatha away to halt her evil deeds. Shortly afterward, their parents arrive on the scene. (Informal: Thanks to twin power, Kelly and Lynn rescue Sophia, kick out Agatha, and then their parents show up.)

24. After being away from the mirror for nearly seven years, Aunt Sophia shares with everyone, “This place feels like a second home to us all. We’ve become a real family here.

25. The television film you’re viewing earned an Emmy nomination: The composer, Richard Bellis, was recognized in the category of Outstanding Individual Achievement in Music Composition for a Miniseries or a Special.
