Recently, several beloved animated movies have been successfully turned into live-action films, and this year’s live-action version of How to Train Your Dragon was one of the best. It pleased longtime fans while also introducing the story of Hiccup, Toothless, and their friends to a new audience. Now, a live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon 2 is coming soon, and ComicBook spoke with Mason Thames about what viewers can expect and what he loved most about the original animated film.
Thames explained that the second animated film resonated with him because it was a strong sequel, particularly praising how it built on the original and the impact of the time jump. While the first film was heartwarming, he felt the second one added a layer of depth and sadness that truly evoked emotion. He believes that’s the main reason people go to the movies – to feel something – and that film delivered that for him.

Thames described the experience as deeply moving and impressively done, expressing enthusiasm for future development. While keeping details limited, they hinted that upcoming additions will be substantial and impressive.
I absolutely loved seeing how much had changed in How to Train Your Dragon 2 – it jumps forward five years and really shows us what’s become of the Vikings and dragons living together peacefully. The movie expands the world so beautifully, introducing amazing new locations and creatures, like those incredibly powerful Bewilderbeasts, and of course, plenty of thrilling action! But what really got to me were the heartfelt family moments, and I was so excited to see them brought to life on the big screen in a fresh and compelling way.
The live-action remake pleased existing fans, but it also attracted a new generation of viewers, which delighted Thames. He has a personal connection to the story, as the original series meant a lot to him when he was a child.
I was just texting with Jay Baruchel yesterday about the original movies and how much they meant to me. I really grew up with those films – they were everything to me, and still are. There’s something special about that movie, and when I look at other live-action adaptations, sometimes they lose what made the original so good, or they change the story in a way that doesn’t feel right.

While the new film might be good, it doesn’t quite capture the magic of the original. I was especially determined to preserve that special quality in How to Train Your Dragon because it’s so important to me. Thankfully, Dean DeBlois understood the world perfectly – he really knows those characters and his vision inside and out. He’s a true genius, and being able to help bring that story to a new audience is incredibly rewarding, as Thames explained.
The live-action movie How to Train Your Dragon is now available to watch on Peacock, and a follow-up movie is scheduled to come out on June 11, 2027.
