For five years now, BioWare and EA have hinted at a fresh addition to the Mass Effect series, variously referred to online as either Mass Effect 5 or Mass Effect 4, disregarding Mass Effect: Andromeda. Since this announcement, we’ve only had one teaser trailer for the game, on N7 Day in 2023. Meanwhile, a Mass Effect TV show has been announced by Amazon. Given that the new game isn’t expected to launch until 2029, it’s understandable that there’s been minimal information released so far.
As a die-hard Mass Effect fan, I can’t help but wonder if my favorite galactic commander, Commander Shepard, will make a comeback in the upcoming game. The original series, sans Mass Effect: Andromeda, has left many of us on the edge of our seats, eagerly anticipating any news about our hero’s return. Speculations about Shepard’s potential appearance have been rampant ever since the game was unveiled, and they continue to dominate discussions among fans.
Many of us can’t imagine the series without Shepard, and some even advocate for a definitive canonization of the Mass Effect 3 ending to ensure his return. However, there are others who harbor different desires and don’t necessarily want Shepard to be in the new game. Regardless, the debate rages on, with fans passionately discussing the possibilities and sharing their theories.
Geth Theory Ignites Debate Again
For some time now, speculation circulates that in the upcoming Mass Effect 5, Commander Shepard might be resurrected or rebuilt in a manner reminiscent of his revival by Cerberus in Mass Effect 2. In this scenario, the Geth – who BioWare has announced will return and are expected to play a significant role in the new game – would presumably carry out the resurrection. While it remains uncertain whether there’s any basis for this theory, Mass Effect enthusiasts have been debating whether Commander Shepard should make a comeback at all, as the game’s future unfolds.
In Mass Effect 5, the concept that Shepard is revived or re-created by the Geth is quite intriguing, I must admit. Furthermore, the notion of Shepard being rebuilt once more has me chuckling and I believe it could be utilized brilliantly for comedic purposes.
Joining in, my fellow YouTuber Legacy Killa HD shares a similar view: “I’m among the rare ones advocating for Shepard’s return, and I would be thrilled if this turns out to be the case. However, I have doubts whether BioWare could develop a new protagonist capable of matching the emotional depth that Shepard possesses. For instance, imagine venturing into the future where most of your close ones are deceased, and those who remain have lived for centuries without you. This scenario seems ripe for an intriguing narrative.
Certainly, many people share the views expressed by those two YouTubers, as evident in the comments on X and elsewhere. Yet, there are some who aren’t necessarily eager for Commander Shepard to make a comeback, regardless of whether it involves being controlled by the Geth or not.
A ‘Mass Effect’ enthusiast expresses, ‘I prefer Shepard, yet I sincerely hope they remain deceased this time.’ The success of ‘Andromeda’ demonstrates that other characters can also thrive within the universe.
What Will BioWare Do?
Regrettably, BioWare finds itself in a predicament where pleasing everyone seems impossible. Even if they decide to reintroduce Commander Shepard, there’s a high chance it will split the fanbase due to the execution. The initial trailer for the game hinted at Shepard’s return, but while one fan appreciated the new protagonist in Mass Effect: Andromeda, many did not. Considering BioWare’s history, they have shown little enthusiasm for recurring main characters, as demonstrated throughout the Dragon Age series and Mass Effect: Andromeda.
