Mass Effect 5 – Female Shepard’s Voice Actor Doesn’t Know if the Character Will Return

BioWare is working on a new Mass Effect game, but hasn’t revealed many details. Now, Jennifer Hale, the voice actor for the female version of Commander Shepard, has said she doesn’t know if Shepard will be in the next game. In an interview, Hale suggested fans should reach out to BioWare directly if they want to know about Shepard’s potential return.

When asked about Commander Shepard’s potential return in a future game, Hale repeatedly stated, “I have no idea.” He encouraged fans who want to see Shepard return to contact BioWare directly and express their interest, suggesting that fan feedback might influence the decision. He added that he personally would be thrilled to see it happen, but he genuinely doesn’t know if it will.

During the interview, Hale also talked about her experiences working on the Mass Effect series. She recalled when fans started calling the female version of Commander Shepard “FemShep,” which happened around the time the cover art for Mass Effect 3 – featuring the female Commander Shepard – was revealed. Hale admitted she wasn’t sure when the nickname originated, but said, “I love it though.”

Hale recalled being captivated by the game’s original cover art. He especially remembered the third installment, which featured a reversible cover – a really innovative idea at the time. He was thrilled to be at a GameStop at midnight, helping promote the release of the game.

Casey Hudson, the director of Mass Effect 3, is a reserved and unassuming person who generally avoids attention. Someone once put the special reversible cover for Mass Effect 3 in front of me to sign, and it was incredibly moving – I almost started crying. I had to stand on a chair or table to properly hold it up and shout, ‘Casey Hudson, thank you!’

Hale remembered watching the trailer for Mass Effect Legendary Edition and noted it was the first time the female version of Commander Shepard (FemShep) had been shown in the original trilogy.

She remembered being really moved when Mass Effect Legendary Edition came out, likely in 2021 or 2022. What struck her most was seeing a female version of Commander Shepard (FemShep) in the game’s trailer – it was the first time that character had been featured so prominently. She was so overwhelmed with emotion that she started crying and immediately grabbed her phone to share the moment with everyone she knew, excitedly telling them how amazing it was.

BioWare has been hinting at Mass Effect 5 since November 2025, during their annual N7 Day celebration. They shared artwork showing the Krogan Civil War and footage of a Mass Relay, and executive producer Mike Gamble assured fans that everything revealed during past N7 Day events would be connected to the new game.
