A recent report suggested that the upcoming Amazon MGM Studios series, Mass Effect, had been reworked to appeal to people unfamiliar with the games. However, Daniel Casey, one of the show’s co-showrunners, has refuted that claim. He stated on social media that the report surprised him and he doesn’t know the source of the information about targeting ‘non-gaming audiences’.
I can’t share details about what I’m working on due to confidentiality agreements, but like you, I was really surprised by that article in The Ankler,” Casey said. “I have no idea where that quote about ‘non-gaming audiences’ came from or who said it – no one has ever said that to me directly.”
According to a report from The Ankler, the Mass Effect TV series was close to being approved. But Peter Friedlander, who leads global television at Amazon MGM Studios, reportedly asked for the story to be revised to attract a wider audience beyond video game fans. Specific details about what changes he requested haven’t been made public.
In recent years, Amazon has turned a few video games into TV series. While their Fallout adaptation has received a lot of positive attention for its well-developed characters and immersive world, the live-action version of Like a Dragon: Yakuza was largely criticized due to significant changes to the story and characters.
The Mass Effect series could work well as a TV show because it naturally blends long, overarching storylines with self-contained episodes that contribute to a bigger picture. The first three games follow Commander Shepard’s adventures across the galaxy aboard the spacecraft Normandy (SR1 and later SR2).
BioWare’s Mass Effect trilogy is beloved by many players, largely because of how the story of the Reaper threat unfolds as Shepard and their team uncover galactic history. While the ending of Mass Effect 3 received some criticism for feeling underwhelming, the characters were consistently praised. Fan favorites include Turian Garrus Vakarian, Asari Liara T’Soni, Krogans Wrex and Grunt, Salarian Mordin Solus, and Quarian Tali’Zorah.
After the original Mass Effect trilogy, BioWare released Mass Effect: Andromeda, a new story with a completely different set of characters. The game follows Scott or Sara Ryder and their team, known as the Pathfinders, as they explore planets in the Andromeda galaxy. Their mission is to determine if these planets can serve as a safe home for the species fleeing the Reaper invasion in the Milky Way. While many criticized the story and characters, some players appreciated the new gameplay features.
BioWare has confirmed they’re already developing a new Mass Effect game—currently known as Mass Effect 5.
I can’t share details about my current work due to confidentiality agreements, but I was just as surprised by that Ankler article as you were. I have no idea where that quote about ‘non-gaming audiences’ originated or who said it, because no one has ever said that to me directly.
