If the new Avengers: Doomsday movie does well in theaters globally, it could pave the way for the much-anticipated Avengers: Secret Wars to finally happen.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t been as successful in theaters since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Introducing new heroes and teams has proven difficult for Marvel Studios, as films like Eternals, Thunderbolts*, Shang-Chi, and The Marvels haven’t performed as well as expected, both in terms of ticket sales and reviews.
Marvel’s most successful movies have generally focused on characters that were first introduced during the ‘Infinity Saga’. Recent films starring Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Thor, Black Panther, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine have all proven to be big hits, earning between $750 million and $1.9 billion worldwide.
I’m really encouraged to see Marvel Studios potentially turning things around! The new Fantastic Four movie has done incredibly well, bringing in over $521 million globally. That makes it the biggest hit so far in what they’re calling the Multiverse Saga, especially considering it introduced a whole new team to the MCU.
Avengers: Doomsday’s success may lead to more Secret Wars
Avengers: Doomsday will bring together heroes from across the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including characters from Shang-Chi, the Thunderbolts, and the Fantastic Four, as well as familiar faces like Thor and Black Panther. The film will also see the return of Chris Evans as Steve Rogers and Robert Downey Jr., who will play the villain Doctor Doom.
The Avengers films have consistently been very profitable for Marvel Studios, with both Infinity War (2018) and Endgame (2019) earning over $2 billion worldwide. According to insider Daniel Richtman, Marvel may split the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars into two movies, but only if Doomsday – another planned film – performs well at the box office.
Rumors about a third Avengers movie have been circulating for a while. For years, there’s been talk of Marvel wanting to end the Multiverse Saga with a three-part Avengers film. A source confirmed this in November 2025, but later revealed the studio changed its mind. Now, it looks like whether or not we get another Avengers movie depends on how well the upcoming Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men team-up performs against Doctor Doom.
The next Avengers movie, currently titled ‘Doomsday’, is planned for release on December 18, 2026. ‘Secret Wars’ will then follow in theaters on December 17, 2027. The films are directed by the Russo Brothers.
