The popular TV series “Matlock” returned last year, featuring Kathy Bates as the main character and quickly becoming CBS’ top freshman show of the season. Now, in the 2025 schedule, Bates and her co-stars are set to reappear on television screens. The network has given us a sneak peek into Season 2, which will continue the story from where Season 1 ended, as Olympia grapples with a significant choice between Julian and Matty. Although this decision may bring hardships for the characters, I am eagerly anticipating Kathy Bates and Skye P. Marshall delivering another compelling performance in the upcoming season.
On October 12, Sunday, CBS is airing a special premiere of the series ‘Matlock’ before shifting it back to its regular Thursday broadcast. This preliminary airing, titled “The Before Times,” implies that the series may not have a significant time jump upon its return, as suggested by the network’s description. You can catch this special showing to find out more for yourself.
Matty doubts the man’s claim of being Alfie’s father, and there is a new arson investigation for the team to handle. Meanwhile, Olympia is working to shield Julian from any potential scrutiny concerning the Wellbrexa case.
If Alfie’s supposed father hasn’t been secretly biding his time for months and Olympia hasn’t managed to make a call regarding Julian and Wellbrexa over the entire summer, it seems that the episode synopsis suggests that Matlock will continue right where Season 1 ended, leaving many unanswered questions. (You can catch up on the first season with a Paramount+ subscription now.)
One question that came to mind after the end of Season 1 was quite simple: will Olympia reveal Julian’s involvement in concealing a Wellbrexa document that could have saved Ellie’s life, possibly many others? If the person responsible was anyone other than her ex-husband and father of her children, it seems likely that Olympia would take action with this knowledge, seeking justice for Matty, despite discovering his deception.
However, it’s important to note that Julian is her former spouse and the father of her kids, and being made a partner doesn’t necessarily mean Olympia would wish to disrupt her family. The charm of Jason Ritter as Julian adds complexity to the situation for me, and his playful references to Matlock intersecting with Tracker hint that Julian may stick around for a while longer.
It appears that Olympia is planning to maintain her secrets for a while, which may not make her happy. This situation could result in intriguing dynamics between Olympia and Matty. In the initial season, it was Matty who was grappling with a significant secret. Now, in Season 2, it seems like Olympia will take on that role. As for how their relationship unfolds post-revelation about Madeline Kingston, only time will tell if they’ll regain the closeness they once shared. I’m eager to see how Skye P. Marshall and Kathy Bates portray any new layers in their bond.
Matlock’s second season on CBS begins on Sunday, October 12 at 8:30 p.m. Eastern Time, before moving to its regular 9 p.m. ET slot on Thursdays from October 16. The series premiere in October means fans can find out if Kathy Bates has won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama by the time the show resumes primetime broadcast. The Emmys will be aired on CBS starting at 8 p.m. Eastern Time on Sunday, September 14.
