The sci-fi film Elysium, starring Matt Damon, has gained a dedicated following over the years, but it’s leaving Netflix soon. Directed by Neill Blomkamp, known for District 9, the 2013 movie is visually stunning, with incredible special effects. It features a shaved-headed Damon in a powerful robotic suit, battling it out in a futuristic world. Unfortunately, this cyberpunk thriller is about to disappear from the streaming service.
The 2013 film Elysium features Matt Damon as Max Da Costa, a man struggling to survive on a ruined Earth while the rich live comfortably on a space station called Elysium. When Max is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, his only hope is to reach Elysium, where medical care is readily available. However, due to his poverty, getting there proves incredibly difficult. The film also stars Sharlto Copley, Jodie Foster, Alice Braga, Diego Luna, and Wagner Moura, all frequent collaborators with the director.
As a sci-fi fan, I was excited when Elysium hit Netflix in early 2025, but unfortunately, it won’t be there forever. The movie is leaving on April 1st, and just like the characters desperately trying to reach the space station for a cure, you’ve got a limited time to stream it while you still can. Don’t miss out if you want to see it!
‘Elysium’ Deserved So Much Better
While Elysium wasn’t a complete financial failure, it didn’t achieve the massive success TriStar Pictures predicted. District 9 is widely considered a standout sci-fi film, praised for its exciting action, impressive visual effects, and powerful message about racism and prejudice. However, Elysium couldn’t replicate that same impact with audiences.
While Elysium earned a respectable $286 million globally, its high production cost of $115 million meant it barely made a profit. Some believe the film didn’t attract a larger audience because it wasn’t a direct follow-up to District 9, despite suggestions of a connection at the end of that movie. The film’s mixed reviews also likely impacted its performance. Elysium received a 64% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but viewers were less impressed, giving it a score of 58%.
What Happened to Neill Blomkamp?

When District 9 came out, it felt like a major new talent in science fiction had arrived. But director Neill Blomkamp’s career stalled after that, and many people stopped paying attention to his work. His next film, Elysium, was followed by the more controversial Chappie. After that, Blomkamp shifted focus, creating short films through his company, Oats Studios, which were briefly released as an anthology on Netflix. When that experiment didn’t succeed, he didn’t return to feature films until 2021’s Demonic, which received negative reviews. His most recent film, 2023’s Gran Turismo, was a modest success. Now, he’s taking on an unexpected project: a reboot of Starship Troopers.
