Matt Smith is considering rejoining “Doctor Who,” twelve years following his character’s regeneration as the Eleventh Doctor. However, he doesn’t wish to reprise his role as the Doctor itself. To mark twenty years since its 2005 revival, a special episode of “Doctor Who: Unleashed” welcomed back various past cast members to discuss their experiences on this iconic and long-running sci-fi series. Although Matt Smith didn’t take part in this special event, his potential return was hinted at by former “Doctor Who” showrunner Steven Moffat during a tease about Smith’s interest in rejoining the show.
Matt Smith initially made his debut as the Eleventh Doctor on “Doctor Who” in the New Year’s Day special of 2010 titled “The End of Time,” succeeding David Tennant. Tennant had left some large footsteps to follow, but Smith’s performance as the Doctor was applauded by critics. From 2010 until the Christmas special of 2013, “The Time of the Doctor,” Smith played the role of the Doctor, eventually being replaced by Peter Capaldi. Despite his recent work in popular productions like “House of the Dragon,” “Last Night in Soho,” and the upcoming “Caught Stealing,” Smith yearns to revisit his “Doctor Who” beginnings.
Matt Smith Wants to Return to Doctor Who (But Not as the Doctor)
In the 20th anniversary special of “Doctor Who: Unleashed”, Steven Moffat, who oversaw the series during Matt Smith and Jenna Coleman’s tenure as the Time Lord, shared that on the day of filming for this special, Smith expressed his desire to return to the set of “Doctor Who”. Smith has hinted at a potential comeback multiple times, too. During an interview with BBC in 2024, he said, “Never say never.” This comment leaves room for his return, but it doesn’t necessarily mean he would reprise his role as the Doctor himself.
As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I confidently declare that among all roles I’ve played, none compares to the extraordinary experience of portraying the Doctor in “Doctor Who.” When asked about reprising my role or joining the cast of a “Morbius” sequel on TikTok by igvpresents, I was quick to express my preference – “Doctor Who is simply unmatched, the Doctor is an iconic character that’s incomparable, undefeatable. It’s all part of the grand design.”
During a panel discussion in 2023, I hinted at a possible return to the world of “Doctor Who,” but perhaps not as the Doctor this time. Instead, I might take on the intriguing character of the Master – a formidable Time Lord who has been a constant thorn in the Doctor’s side for eons (as reported by TikTok).

Smith shared with the audience that if he could return, he’d prefer to come back as the character known as the Master. However, he acknowledged it was impossible since John Simm had portrayed the Master during David Tennant’s time, and there have been many Masters before him. He joked that people might find it strange if the 11th Doctor acted strangely towards others. This is in reference to John Simm, who played the Master during Peter Capaldi’s era and again with Michelle Gomez as Missy. The Master has also been portrayed by Roger Delgado, Anthony Ainley, Eric Roberts, and Sacha Dhawan in the past.
Why Matt Smith’s Debut as the Master Makes Even More Sense Now
Previously, Matt Smith had expressed that his comeback as the Master in “Doctor Who” wouldn’t work out, but this notion no longer holds true. The return of Russell T. Davies as the showrunner in 2023 has introduced fresh lore about Time Lords’ regeneration abilities. To begin with, Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor transformed back into David Tennant. Then, Tennant’s Fourteenth Doctor experienced the series’ first bi-generation, enabling him to coexist with Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor. Now, Gatwa’s Doctor has regenerated into Billie Piper, who previously played the companion Rose Tyler in “Doctor Who.
Given that the concept of regenerations has been extensively explored, particularly with the Master attempting to seize the Doctor’s life and history in “The Power of the Doctor” in 2022, it seems like an ideal moment for Matt Smith to make his debut as the Master. His past villainous roles in projects such as “Morbius,” “House of the Dragon,” “Terminator: Genisys,” and even his occasional moral ambiguity in “Doctor Who” suggest he would excel as an antagonist. The Master is a cunning and manipulative adversary, and Smith’s acting versatility makes him well-suited to portray this character – and it would be quite a surprising turn of events.
After Ncuti Gatwa’s unexpected exit in “The Reality War” (2025), and despite Billie Piper’s surprising reappearance, seemingly as the Sixteenth Doctor, the future of Doctor Who remains uncertain. The recent years of the show have faced criticism for a decline in quality, plot development, and character growth. Although the franchise continues with “The War Between the Land and the Sea” and an animated spinoff aimed at preschoolers, as of now, Doctor Who has not been officially confirmed to return. Matt Smith’s potential comeback as a powerful and iconic antagonist could be the boost the series needs to regain its momentum.
