If you’ve viewed pictures of Matt Smith for his new role in Darren Aronofsky’s film “Caught Stealing,” you might have noticed that his appearance is quite distinct from what we usually see him as.
In my opinion, as a cinephile, I must say that this movie presents the charismatic ex-Doctor Who actor in a refreshingly rebellious role – a vibrant punk named Russ, adorned with a striking Mohawk hairdo. From what I gathered, it appears he relished every moment embodying this character, making for an exhilarating performance that is nothing short of a delightful splash in the cinematic pool.
He remarked, “That day was one of my best experiences on a film set.” He adored that day as it introduced him to something unique – a device we call a biscuit. Essentially, you’re tethered to a rally car engine with a rally driver, and they have this contraption reminiscent of a winch at the rear.
In other words, imagine yourself on a thrilling amusement park ride, with a racecar engine and its driver at the front!”
This paraphrase maintains the original meaning while using simpler, more conversational language.
Aronofsky commented, “Go ahead and relax, feel free to let out a blood-curdling yell if you wish!” or “Aronofsky advised, ‘Don’t fret, simply release a powerful roar if you feel like it!’
Smith mentioned that, following a few driving lessons, Aronofsky allowed him to take the wheel himself during certain parts – as the director desired a sense of authenticity for the chase sequence.
He mentioned that it was impressive because, you know, a lot of action movies tend to exaggerate the physics of things to an absurd degree, almost as if that’s an effective way to keep audiences entertained.
What I find exhilarating is getting back to the nitty-gritty of actual physics, mending real fractures, and repairing damaged vehicles. There’s an undeniable energy in that work.
The plot unfolds post an ex-baseball player played by Austin Butler, navigating the seedy criminal underbelly of ’90s New York after being entrusted with a cat belonging to another character, portrayed by Smith. Zoë Kravitz, Regina King, and Liev Schreiber are among the notable cast members who play significant roles in this narrative.
In the movie, you’ll find the characteristic intensity typical of Darren Aronofsky’s previous critically-acclaimed works like Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan, and mother!. However, this production also showcases a more spontaneous, playful spirit that seems to be an unprecedented departure for the director.
In a similar manner, Aronofsky mentions that he essentially tackled this film much like any other project he undertakes.
He shared that while his method remains consistent for each project, he finds the process of creating movies incredibly enjoyable, and he aimed to infuse plenty of joy in crafting this particular film.
As a film lover, I can confidently say that the movie aims to instill a sense of pure joy and ensure a memorable, enjoyable experience for the viewers. Yet, don’t be fooled – it’s quite an emotionally charged journey too. In essence, you’ll be treated to a thrilling rollercoaster ride that delivers both laughter and tears!
