As a seasoned movie enthusiast with years of navigating the intricacies of Hollywood under my belt, I find myself utterly dismayed by this unfortunate turn of events surrounding Mattel‘s Wicked dolls. As a parent, I can empathize with the distress and embarrassment the plaintiff must have experienced when her child stumbled upon such explicit content.
A class action lawsuit against Mattel is gaining momentum following the sale of dolls featuring a URL for an adult-oriented website on their packaging. According to court records, a woman from South Carolina has filed this lawsuit concerning a special edition doll linked to the movie Wicked. She alleges that her child accessed the site via the packaging, which bore no relation to the Wicked doll.
In a statement given to Variety on Tuesday, Mattel admitted to an error concerning the directing of customers. They intended to guide customers towards the official website for the movie “Wicked,” but inadvertently directed them to a site for a pornographic film distributor also named Wicked. The unnamed complainant alleges that Mattel failed to provide her with a refund when contacted about this mistake. Moreover, she asserts that she and her daughter experienced emotional distress due to the typographical error.
In the court case, it’s stated that the scenes shown were explicit, graphic nudity featuring sexual acts. The plaintiff’s daughter, who is a minor, showed her mother these photos right away, and they were both shocked by their content. Had the plaintiff known about this inappropriate flaw with the product before purchasing it, she would not have made that decision.

The toys from various retailers nationwide have been removed to rectify a printing mistake. Mattel acknowledged a mislabeling on the packaging of their Wicked collection dolls, mainly distributed in the U.S., which were meant to guide consumers to the official WickedMovie.com website. They advised customers to either throw away the product packaging or cover up the link.
Furthermore, Michael Moses, the chief marketing officer at Universal Pictures, discussed this matter with Variety. He stated, “I don’t believe every bit of press is beneficial. I typically differentiate between incidents that could potentially deter people from wanting to watch the movie and those that probably won’t. In my opinion, that was an instance more about sharing a story than posing a genuine threat.
The musical adaptation titled “Wicked,” based on the Broadway hit, premiered in theaters on November 22nd. Surprisingly, it’s performing exceptionally well at the box office, earning an impressive $112 million during its opening weekend. To date, it has amassed approximately $360 million globally. This enchanting film is actually a prequel to “The Wizard of Oz.” It features Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba. Currently, you can catch it playing in theaters across the globe.
