Matthew Lillard, known for his roles in horror films, has spoken about his reaction to Quentin Tarantino’s critical comments about his acting.
During an interview at GalaxyCon in Columbus, Ohio, Matthew Lillard responded to Quentin Tarantino’s recent criticism on The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast. Tarantino, while discussing his favorite 21st-century films, sharply criticized several actors, including Lillard, stating he simply doesn’t like him.
Although Quentin Tarantino’s comments about Damian Lillard weren’t as strong as the critical things he’s said about other actors like Paul Dano, Lillard was still understandably upset. Initially, Lillard seemed to take it in stride, even quoting Tarantino as saying he didn’t think Lillard was a good actor. When the audience reacted negatively, Lillard dismissed it with a shrug, saying he didn’t care.
Lillard confessed that Tarantino’s criticism did bother him, as it’s never pleasant to hear disapproval from a director as respected as the one behind Kill Bill. “It really hurts,” he admitted, adding with frustration, “It just sucks.” He pointed out that a major star likely wouldn’t face the same treatment, explaining, “You wouldn’t say that to Tom Cruise or another top actor in Hollywood.”
He explained that Quentin Tarantino’s criticism was actually a humbling experience. Lillard feels he’s well-known among fans at events like conventions, but not very famous in the broader Hollywood scene – though he acknowledges that perception might not be entirely accurate. As he put it, “I’m really popular here, but not so much in Hollywood. They’re two completely different worlds. It’s humbling, and honestly, it stings.”
Quentin Tarantino recently faced significant criticism after publicly criticizing several creators and actors. He accused Suzanne Collins, author of The Hunger Games, of plagiarism, directed insults at The Batman actor Paul Dano, and disparaged the fans of these works, calling them unintelligent. These comments sparked widespread outrage within the entertainment industry and among viewers.
