Matthew Macfadyen felt “miscast” as Mr Darcy in Pride & Prejudice: “I’m not dishy enough”

As a devoted fan of Pride and Prejudice, I was initially taken aback when I heard Matthew Macfadyen express his feelings of being “miscast” as Mr. Darcy in the 2005 film adaptation. Having grown up watching his portrayal of the character opposite Keira Knightley’s Elizabeth Bennet, I couldn’t imagine anyone else embodying the complexities and depth of the beloved hero.

Matthew Macfadyen has shared his thoughts on why he feels he wasn’t the ideal choice to play Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice.

In the 2005 movie version of Jane Austen’s novel, The Succession actor played the role of Mr. Darcy, Austen’s cherished character, opposite Keira Knightley portraying Elizabeth Bennet.

Although Macfadyen gained many fans with his portrayal of the character, the actor recently shared in an interview that he didn’t relish the filming process.

He shared with CBS Mornings that he hadn’t fully appreciated it. “I regret saying that, but not every moment was enjoyable for me. I wanted to enjoy it more and be less anxious about the experience.”

The actor confessed that his anxiety came from believing he wasn’t the best pick for the role.

“I felt a bit miscast, like, ‘I’m not dishy enough.’ But it worked out,” he said.

Although he didn’t initially believe he was suited for the part, the actor who portrayed Deadpool and Wolverine shared this: People often ask me now if I were Mr. Darcy. Twenty years have passed. So I find myself pondering, “Am I really not aging that much?”

Nine years following the 1995 miniseries of Pride and Prejudice, during which Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle portrayed Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth respectively, a film version was released.
