Matthew McConaughey has generally stayed out of trouble during his career as a public figure, but he did have one memorable encounter with the law. Back in 1999, police arrested him at his home where he was reportedly playing the bongos naked while smoking marijuana. It was a bizarre situation, but McConaughey now looks back on it with humor. He recently recounted the story to his wife to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the incident, jokingly recreating a scene like something from Law & Order.
Matthew McConaughey isn’t just a talented actor – he’s also a successful entrepreneur. One of his ventures is Pantalones Organic Tequila, which he co-founded with his wife, Camila Alves (42). They often star in humorous commercials for the brand, and while many of those ads have become popular online, their newest one is particularly hilarious. The ad, posted on McConaughey’s Instagram, begins with a voiceover by Steve ZirnKilton from Law & Order – it’s best to just watch it for yourself!

This marketing campaign is fantastic! I especially appreciate how Matthew and Camila McConaughey fully embraced the ‘Law & Order’ style with the narration and title card. It’s surprisingly funny to see Camila reading the real police report from Matthew’s 1999 arrest while he plays the bongos. It takes real confidence to poke fun at yourself, and this is a perfect example. Matthew’s willingness to be self-deprecating is really impressive.

Watching Matthew McConaughey’s Latest Movie As A Parent Was Way More Intense Than I Anticipated
Matthew McConaughey, known for his lively personality – he’s even collaborated with Snoop Dogg – has openly discussed an arrest from his past. In his 2020 book, Greenlights, he explained that after a long night of partying in Austin, he decided to smoke marijuana. While high and dancing naked to music, police arrived at his home and quickly subdued him, using nightsticks to restrain and handcuff him. In the end, McConaughey pleaded guilty to a minor offense and simply paid a $50 fine.
Matthew McConaughey has changed a lot since his past legal issues. He’s become a successful actor and a devoted family man, raising three children with his wife, Camila Alves, whom he met in 2006 and married in 2012. They’ve also had a lot of fun promoting their tequila brand, creating commercials that are playful and memorable – one even references the classic film Dazed & Confused, and another shows them humorously celebrating National No Pants Day.
This new ad, which playfully references the couple’s recent arrest involving bongos, is another brilliant move in their career. It’s so self-aware, it reminds me of something Ryan Reynolds would create. In fact, even Reynolds would have a hard time outdoing this *Law & Orderstyle commercial – it would have been perfect with a cameo from Mariska Hargitay!
Besides his commercial work, Matthew McConaughey continues to act in films. His newest movie, The Lost Bus, released in 2025, is now available to stream on Apple TV+. You can also revisit some of his most popular films.
