Is Matthew McConaughey just a Ken?
Matthew McConaughey said he’d love to play Ken’s father in a potential *Barbie* sequel, and Margot Robbie herself has given him her enthusiastic support.
Oh my gosh, you guys, I was *watching* Today on September 16th, and Craig Melvin was talking to Margot about Ryan Gosling! They had apparently *asked* Ryan if he’d be Ken in the Barbie movie, and Margot was SO excited she immediately blurted out, “Did he say yes?!” It was the cutest thing ever, I seriously almost screamed at the TV!
When she received the positive response, the 35-year-old excitedly exclaimed, âWonderful! Thank you so much for your help.â
Matthew, 55, was thrilled to discuss the possibility of appearing on Today. He was especially excited to see the designs theyâd created of him as the character, which Barbie actress America Ferrara had playfully nicknamed the “King of the Kens.”
She was thrilled about the project, saying it was something she couldn’t possibly turn down.
Despite rumors, there’s currently no official word on whether a sequel to the *Barbie* movie is being planned, as Margot Robbie has previously stated.
She told TopMob News in 2023 that they had dedicated all their effort to the film and she couldn’t envision what project they would tackle next.

And if there were to be a sequel, it all comes down to the filmâs writer and director, Greta Gerwig.
“It would be up to Greta,” Margot added. “I wouldn’t do it without Greta.”
As Greta Gerwig mentioned, she and her partner and co-writer, Noah Baumbach, aren’t even confident they have a strong concept for a follow-up film.
After the film came out, she told *The New York Times* that this was all she had left to give. She explained that she feels this way after finishing every movie – like sheâs used up all her ideas and accomplished everything she ever wanted to.
The director of *Lady Bird* explained that while she doesn’t want to discourage anyone else from pursuing their goals, she currently has no desire to take on any new projects herself.

Even if she had an idea, the Oscar nominee would likely keep it secret until she was certain it was ready to share.
Greta Gerwig explained in a 2023 discussion with the Writers Guild of America that she prefers to keep her movie ideas under wraps during the early stages. She believes sharing them too soon can actually harm the final product, making the movie less successful. She avoids discussing or presenting early drafts because she worries it will negatively impact the creative process.
While it’s still unconfirmed if Matthew will be in a *Barbie* sequel, here’s a look at the celebrities who were considered for roles in the first movie.

Before Greta Gerwigâs *Barbie* movie came out, Sony had already been developing a film based on the doll for seven years, and a comedian was set to star.
She initially said in 2017 that scheduling issues prevented her from appearing in the movie, but recently she shared the true reason she left the project.
She explained on *Watch What Happens Live* in June 2023 that they initially claimed scheduling issues kept her from participating, but the real reason was creative disagreements. However, she’s optimistic about the project now, saying the new team seems to be taking a feminist and exciting approach, and she plans to watch the movie.
The actress from *Trainwreck* feels the same way she did when she first understood how the project was developing.
She told the *Hollywood Reporter* in March 2022 that they were unwilling to proceed with her preferred approach, which was the only way she was interested in moving forward.
Greta Gerwig mentioned wanting Barbie to be seen as an inventor, and the studio playfully responded by initially suggesting one of her inventions would be Jell-O heels. They then surprised her with a pair of actual designer shoes – Manolo Blahniks.
She explained that the assumption everyone expects women to want the same thing bothered her, and she wished sheâd simply said, âYouâve misjudged me.â

Following Amy’s exit, Anne Hathaway was chosen in 2018 to take over the role, with the film initially scheduled for release in 2020. However, by the end of that year, Deadline reported that Anne had left the project. The film then moved to Warner Bros., with Margot Robbie ultimately cast as Barbie.

Margot Robbie, the star and a producer of *Barbie*, initially wanted Gal Gadot, known for her role in *Wonder Woman*, to play Barbie.
Margot Robbie described Gal Gadot as embodying the spirit of Barbie in an interview with Vogue. She explained that while Gadot is incredibly beautiful, she’s also so genuinely kind and sincere that it’s endearing, almost to the point of being playfully awkward. It’s a quality that makes you like her even more, despite her beauty.

Just before the release of *Barbie*, Saoirse Ronan, who previously worked with the director Greta Gerwig on *Lady Bird*, shared that she was considered for a brief appearance in the film. Unfortunately, she was filming *The Outrun* in Scotland and couldn’t take the role.
She explained to *People* magazine that she was originally scheduled to appear in the movie as an extra Barbie. Because filming took place in London, where she lives, she was set to play a small role, but unfortunately, she wasn’t able to make it work and was really disappointed.

Okay, so Saoirse Ronan wasn’t the *only* person Greta was hoping to get in the movie! She actually really wanted TimothĂ©e Chalamet – you guys, TimothĂ©e! – from *Lady Bird* to be a part of it too. I mean, can you imagine?! It would have been *amazing*. I was honestly crossing my fingers so hard for that to happen!
Greta explained to CinemaBlend that she’d planned a special cameo appearance with TimothĂ©e Chalamet and Kylie Rogers, but both were unavailable, which frustrated her. She emphasized her affection for them, saying it felt like working on the film without her own children – even though she isn’t their mother, she feels a strong maternal connection to them.

According to casting director Allison Jones, Dan Levy, known from *Schitt’s Creek*, couldn’t accept the role of Ken because the movie required three months of filming in London, as she told *Vanity Fair*.
In January 2024, the actor explained to *People* magazine that despite a lot of effort, scheduling conflicts prevented him from taking the role. He said, “It just wasn’t possible to make it work, so I wasn’t available.”
He admitted that the experience still bothers him occasionally. He acknowledged it was a particularly difficult day, especially considering the filmâs massive scale and importance.

Allison said Bowen Yang, a cast member on *Saturday Night Live*, was also unable to film.

Finally, Ben Platt was the third actor considered for the role of Ken, and Allison shared that he was disappointed he didn’t get the part.

The former *Glee* star was disappointed to lose the role of Allan, which eventually went to Michael Cera.
Allison recounted that Jonathan Groff was shocked and said he couldn’t believe he was even writing the message, but he had to withdraw from the role of Allan.

Matt Bomer, known for his role in *White Collar*, put in a lot of effort auditioning for a film, but he ultimately decided to prioritize *Maestro*, Bradley Cooperâs upcoming movie, and spend quality time with his husband, Simon Halls, and their children, Kit, Walker, and Henry.
Matt recently told Business Insider that even though his role in *Maestro* wasn’t large, Bradley Cooper was very open to working with him from the start. He explained that filming *Barbie* quickly between flights from London made the *Maestro* experience particularly special. He felt that if he hadnât had that quick *Barbie* shoot, working on *Maestro* wouldn’t have felt the same.
