Today, Friends is remembered as much for its emotional moments as for being a lighthearted comedy that always made us laugh. Looking back, one of the most poignant stories involves an unforgettable, improvised scene by Matthew Perry.
The way Matthew Perry always wanted the final joke made a memorable scene from Friends even more heartwarming. Since his unexpected passing two years ago, that spontaneous moment feels especially poignant.
Though many funny scenes in Friends were made up on the spot, the very last moment of the show carries a deeper emotional weight than a typical joke. Even twenty years later, it feels even more meaningful than when Matthew Perry originally conceived it.
Matthew Perry Improvised The Final Line Of Friends
After ten successful seasons, the hugely popular sitcom Friends faced a lot of expectation to deliver a satisfying series finale in 2004. Thankfully, the episode was generally well-received, and Chandler’s last joke provided a perfect, memorable ending to the show.
When Rachel suggests the six friends grab coffee before parting ways, Chandler jokingly asks, “Where?” This is a smart reference to Central Perk, the coffee shop where the group spends almost all of their time throughout the entire series, from the very first episode to this final one.
This line is funny because the characters always meet at the same coffee shop in New York, a running joke throughout the show. It’s also a subtle, knowing reference from actor Matthew Perry – the Central Perk set had actually been taken down before they filmed this last scene.
In his memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, Matthew Perry revealed that he came up with the show’s final line himself. He pitched the idea to showrunner Marta Kauffman just before they started filming the finale, explaining, “Nobody else will care about this except me. So, may I please have the last line?”
Kauffman was happy with the change, even though Chandler’s final line wasn’t originally in the script she’d written with David Crane. Perry unexpectedly ad-libbed the last thing Chandler said, and the studio audience loved it.
The Other Friends Stars Had No Idea Perry’s Line Was Coming
Ten years after the characters of Friends first gathered at Central Perk, the show ended with a final joke referencing their beloved coffee shop. Interestingly, Matthew Perry came up with the joke on the spot, surprising even his co-stars.
When the scene aired, Courtney Cox, David Schwimmer, and Matt LeBlanc all reacted with genuine smiles, experiencing Matthew Perry’s joke for the very first time. Perry himself beautifully described these moments as “the perfect blend of warmth and laughter – everything the show Friends always offered to its audience.”
Perry’s Recollection Of The Moment In His Memoir Hits Even Harder Now
It’s particularly difficult to rewatch the final episode of Friends knowing that Matthew Perry, who played Chandler Bing, has passed away. His final line in the show is even more poignant and emotional now, given his tragic death.
There’s no better example of Matthew Perry’s deep affection for Friends and the role that launched his career than this story. We can be thankful he had the chance to say the final line of the show, even though it sadly reminds us of his untimely passing.
