German series Maxton Hall brought some serious drama in its first outing on Prime Video.

This six-episode series is inspired by Mona Kasten’s popular novel, Save Me. It follows Ruby, a bright student on scholarship, and James, a privileged young man, after they meet in an unexpected way at the elite Maxton Hall school.

Even though they came from very different backgrounds, they kept finding their way back to each other. They faced many challenges, and finally reconnected at the end of the season, but then a sudden tragedy threatened their future together.

Damian Hardung, discussing his character James, explained that James is searching for a sense of grounding. “He needs something stable to rely on, just like everyone else,” Hardung said. “The problem is, his visions of what’s to come offer no comfort because they aren’t actually real.”

I’m really invested in this character’s journey, and season two seems like it’s going to be all about him hitting rock bottom. It looks like he’s lost everything – the support of his family, even love – and now he’s facing this huge internal void. The main challenge for him this season is going to be figuring out how to rebuild himself and find his way back from that emptiness. I’m excited (and a little worried!) to see how he does.

According to Harriet Herbig-Matten, the second season of Ruby focuses on themes of establishing healthy boundaries, emotional healing, and the process of letting go of a relationship.

Okay, so Ruby’s choice to support James after everything he put her through in the first episode? Emotionally, I get it. She’s clearly a deeply empathetic person. But honestly, as I was watching, I struggled to see the logic. It just didn’t quite add up for me, rationally speaking.

“But I think much of it is also self-protection.”

Maxton Hall season 2 plot: What will happen?

After a heartfelt conversation and a passionate kiss, Ruby and James finally reconciled in the season one finale.

But tragedy was just around the corner.

James and Lydia arrived home from their Oxford interviews to devastating news: their mother, Cordelia, had passed away after a stroke. Overwhelmed, James immediately lashed out and attacked their father.

The season ended with Ruby back home with her family, excitedly sharing stories about her trip to Oxford and how well she thought her last interview went.

By contrast, James’s life had been upended, leaving him bereft of any hope or joy.

What’s next for them both? And after that surprising turn of events, will James end things with Ruby?

The show’s summary says that Ruby’s life is going well, but a family crisis suddenly brings her down to earth, and James is the one who helps her face this difficult new reality.

Ruby is heartbroken. She’s never felt so strongly about anyone as she does for James, and she’s never been so deeply hurt. She wishes she could go back to how things were before, when she was new to Maxton Hall and hadn’t become involved in the exclusive world of her classmates.

“But she can’t forget James—especially since he’s doing everything he can to win her back.”
