Be warned, this contains spoilers for episode 3 of Mayor of Kingstown season 4! Jeremy Renner, the star of Mayor of Kingstown, has revealed that a surprising death scene in the current season was influenced by his 2008 film, The Hurt Locker. Season 4 of Mayor of Kingstown has been full of unexpected turns, the most shocking being the death of Carney, who was killed by Cortez – a prisoner Mike released.
During an interview with Jeremy Renner and Edie Falco, ScreenRant discussed the death of their character, Carney, and how it will impact the plot of Mayor of Kingstown season 4. Renner explained that series creator Taylor Sheridan drew inspiration from the film The Hurt Locker, particularly in portraying the constant danger and vulnerability faced by all the characters. Here’s what Renner and Falco had to say:
ScreenRant notes that episode 402 is packed with surprising developments, including the death of a recurring character, Carney, who’s been on the show since season 2. This raises the question of how many more unexpected plot twists viewers can anticipate as the season continues.
As a fan, I think what’s interesting about Edie Falco’s character is that she really knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to pursue it, even if it means others get hurt along the way. It seems like she’s learned to block out everything else and just concentrate on her goal, and honestly, I admire that single-mindedness. That’s all I can really say without giving too much away!
From the very beginning, the show has always been willing to eliminate characters at any point, and that was a deliberate choice. Taylor Sheridan, the creator, wanted to create that sense of unpredictability, similar to the tension in ‘The Hurt Locker,’ where you’re constantly on edge. He likes to mislead the audience – like with my character coming to collect my brother’s shoes after he played the mayor. This creates a lot of suspense because viewers know anyone could be in danger. And this season, there’s a lot more of that risk and uncertainty.
The death of Carney has significantly impacted the events of Mayor of Kingstown season 4, episode 3. Mike is determined to find out who ordered the hit, even though he’s always been able to keep law enforcement safe in the past. He asks Ian and Stevie to help him investigate, but so far, the person responsible remains a mystery.

Carney joined the cast of Mayor of Kingstown in season 2, playing a prison guard who replaced Ed Simmons. He’s become a frequent contact for Mike, but consistently opposed any attempts to negotiate or cooperate with criminal groups, always showing them hostility.
In season four, he takes on a new job: training a new character, Cindy, to keep an eye on Mike’s brother, Kyle, who is in prison. Kyle might be even more at risk now, as someone could be planning a murder outside of prison to send a message with his death. The show draws inspiration from The Hurt Locker by not shying away from death and exploring darker storylines.
Mike is facing a lot right now, and Carney’s death will likely have lasting consequences. He’s dealing with a new Warden, Nina Hobbs, who isn’t willing to cooperate, and a Detroit gangster named Frank Moses is joining forces with Bunny to take over the town.
Because the death of Carney was so important to the start of season 4 of Mayor of Kingstown, finding out who killed him will likely be a major focus for the rest of the season. The show will probably keep the details a secret until it’s ready to reveal the truth and give Mike the chance to avenge his friend.
New episodes of Mayor of Kingstown season 4 arrive Sundays on Paramount+.
