Mayor Slams Love Island USA’s Sean Reifel for Quitting Police Job

It’s not all love for this Islander.

Sean Reifel, a 29-year-old from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, left his job as a police officer after less than a year to appear on season eight of Love Island USA. Local officials, including the police chief and mayor, have criticized his decision, speaking out before the show’s June 2nd premiere on Peacock.

Bethlehem Mayor J. William Reynolds stated on May 29th, according to WHTM, that the police department invested significant time and taxpayer money – thousands of dollars – in training the officer who recently left. The department is now facing another difficult-to-fill vacancy, and won’t be able to fill it until next year, which is frustrating for everyone involved.

Reynolds expressed his surprise that, in the United States, people are now choosing to be on reality TV shows instead of pursuing careers in law enforcement.

Police Chief Michelle Kott, who witnessed Reifel’s swearing-in ceremony with Reynolds in August 2025, also expressed frustration with the resignation.

According to a report in The Morning Call on May 30, Kott said he cares about Sean and respects his service as an officer, but he’s upset about his leaving, which Kott described as ‘extremely difficult’.

Kott explained that the Bethlehem Police Department puts a lot of effort into hiring the most qualified candidates. He said increased recruitment is necessary because of staffing shortages affecting both patrol and the vice unit.

When asked about letting him take time off to film in Fiji this summer, Kott said she probably wouldn’t approve it.

Right now, it’s unlikely any department would approve letting an officer take weeks off to be on a TV show. Everyone is already stretched thin, working overtime to cover the workload, and officers are getting burned out. It would send the wrong message, according to Kott.

Even though Reifel has retired from law enforcement, he’s now appearing on Peacock as a police officer in a new role.

In the trailer, Officer Reifel explained, ‘I’m not a model or an actor, I’m a police officer.’ He demonstrated his strength with a handstand, adding, ‘Even if you’re having a really bad day, I’m here to help you get through it.’

Reifel explained what qualities he appreciates in a partner, saying he’s really attracted to thoughtfulness and appreciates it a lot.
