The Marvel Cinematic Universe has a strong track record of successfully adapting major comic book events for the big screen. Storylines like *Age of Ultron*, *Civil War*, and the epic *Infinity War* have formed the core of the franchise’s overall story. This continues with the upcoming *Avengers: Doomsday* and *Avengers: Secret Wars*, which are expected to be inspired by classic comics and essentially refresh the cinematic universe. This refresh will finally bring the Mutants and X-Men into the main Marvel timeline, allowing for many more comic book stories to be adapted. Now, a particularly famous and often debated storyline has gained support from one of the MCU’s stars, suggesting it could be adapted in the future.
While at ComicCon LA with her Marvel co-star Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen shared her hope to see the popular “House of M” storyline from the comics adapted into a movie or series. She explained that she thinks it would be really exciting to explore a story involving both the X-Men and the Avengers, particularly the famous “No more mutants” plotline. “I just think it could be so fun,” she said.
The 2005 comic series *House of M* featured Wanda Maximoff, deeply upset by the loss of her children, altering reality so that mutants were the most powerful group and every hero got what they always wanted. However, the story is best known for its shocking ending: Wanda, in despair, says “No more mutants,” which instantly removes the powers from almost all mutants, leaving them on the brink of extinction. This event dramatically changed the X-Men comics for years to come. While a version of this story could work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it might be premature to eliminate a large group of characters who are still being introduced to audiences.
Elizabeth Olsen Teases Wanda’s Return (But Will It Happen?)
A storyline based on the ‘House of M’ comic event can’t happen until Wanda Maximoff, also known as the Scarlet Witch, returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While she seemingly sacrificed herself at the end of ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ – collapsing Mount Wundagore on top of herself and destroying all versions of the Darkhold – fans have questioned whether she’s truly gone. The recent Disney+ series, ‘Agatha All Along,’ has further complicated things, leaving Wanda’s fate uncertain. Actress Elizabeth Olsen hinted at a possible return during a ComicCon LA panel.
Elizabeth Olsen expressed hope that Marvel Studios will continue to innovate and keep audiences engaged. She believes the key to the franchise’s continued success is avoiding predictable storylines and constantly finding new ways to surprise viewers. That’s what she’s hoping for in the future.
Elizabeth Olsen continuing to refer to herself as “we” when talking about the Marvel Cinematic Universe suggests she knows Wanda Maximoff might return, even though Marvel hasn’t confirmed anything. Fans have been hoping to see Wanda back for a while, and the introduction of her son, Wiccan, in the *Agatha All Along* series sets up a potential storyline. Marvel could adapt the *Children’s Crusade* comic arc, where Wiccan and other young heroes search for the Scarlet Witch, hoping to save her. Plus, Wanda’s popular appearance as a villain in the *Marvel Zombies* animated series shows she’s still a compelling character that audiences enjoy.
