MCU’s Lost Squirrel Girl Star Addresses Marvel Return, 9 Years After Cancellation

It’s been nearly ten years since plans for a live-action Squirrel Girl show fell through, and the actress who was set to play her has now spoken about the cancellation and whether she might return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The show, called New Warriors, was originally meant to be connected to the MCU and reportedly tested very well with audiences. Written by Kevin Biegel and planned for the Freeform channel, Marvel ultimately decided to cancel it, leaving Squirrel Girl’s TV debut unrealized.

Milana Vayntrub, the actress who played Squirrel Girl, recently reaffirmed how much she loves the character and expressed her willingness to reprise the role. During a Reddit “Ask Me Anything” session promoting her new show, Bad Shabbos on Netflix, she was asked if she’d ever play Squirrel Girl in a live-action project again, especially now that she’s also voicing the character in the Marvel Rivals game. Vayntrub responded with clear excitement, saying she’d happily play Squirrel Girl in any capacity, even at a child’s birthday party! It’s safe to say she’s very enthusiastic about returning to the role.

What Happened To Squirrel Girl (& Marvel’s New Warriors)

Vayntrub also discussed the cancellation of New Warriors. She explained it was a result of corporate restructuring, which often happens in large companies. “It was really disappointing,” she said. “The timing just didn’t work out. With Marvel, Hulu, and Disney merging, a lot of projects and people were affected. It was a good show, and I think people would have enjoyed it.”

The show’s cancellation was likely due, in part, to the reorganization at DC, which affected many projects when the new DCU was created. However, showrunner Kevin Biegel has shared a more troubling explanation. When he originally revealed popular images of actress Milana Vayntrub as Squirrel Girl, he tweeted that the show wasn’t cancelled because it was bad, but because of a high-ranking executive who had a specific agenda. That executive was later fired, and Biegel expressed his sadness about the show’s loss. According to Biegel, the executive believed New Warriors was “too gay.”

It’s uncertain if the pilot for New Warriors will ever be released, but it’s obvious how much Milana Vayntrub cares about her character, and Marvel should consider bringing her back if the chance arises. With a project like Secret Wars potentially including cameos, it wouldn’t be far-fetched. Vayntrub herself expressed her deep connection to the character, replying to a fan’s compliment with excitement: “OMG, thank you!!!! That means the world to me. I love Doreen and am genuinely inspired by her. I want to be her. I want to be her every day!”
