Even as of 2025, competition between web browsers remains fierce. Google and Microsoft are the main rivals, and Microsoft recently advertised Edge as the preferred browser for Windows 11, emphasizing its AI features and included VPN.
OpenAI has released ChatGPT Atlas, a new web browser powered by artificial intelligence. It’s currently available for macOS and will be released on Windows, iOS, and Android devices in the near future.
It’s worth noting that the browser’s agent mode will exclusively be available for ChatGPT Plus and Pro users. It is still unclear whether OpenAI will ship agent mode to ChatGPT free users.
During the livestream launch of ChatGPT Atlas, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman praised it as a generally excellent browser, noting its speed and smooth performance. He and other OpenAI employees highlighted that ChatGPT is central to the browser’s functionality and overall experience.
ChatGPT Atlas comes with several useful features, and its memory function is considered the standout, according to Adam Fry, the product lead for ChatGPT Search. OpenAI explains that this feature helps make the browsing experience more tailored and effective.
This allows you to use ChatGPT within Atlas to automate tasks for you, like booking flights or making restaurant reservations. OpenAI has built these automation features directly into ChatGPT Atlas’ agent mode, using tools like ChatGPT agent and Operator to make it even more helpful.
A neat feature lets your screen split when you click a link from search results, showing both the webpage and ChatGPT’s response. OpenAI says this is designed to give you helpful support while you browse, but you can turn it off in the settings if you prefer.
OpenAI explains that ChatGPT Atlas is a first look at a new browser and they’re eager to hear what users think so they can continue improving it.
We’re seeing a surge of new web browsers that use artificial intelligence. Companies like Perplexity with their Comet browser, and Google with AI features added to Chrome – including an AI Mode, AI Overviews, and the Gemini integration – are leading the way. Interestingly, Google’s stock price dropped 2.5% after ChatGPT announced its Atlas feature.
