Meet Steven Spielberg’s Family: A Guide to His 7 Kids

Just so you know, Steven Spielberg comes from a large family. He and his wife, Kate Capshaw, have seven children together: Jessica Capshaw (49), Max Spielberg (40), Theo Spielberg (37), Sasha Spielberg (36), Sawyer Spielberg (34), Mikaela Spielberg (30), and Destry Allyn Spielberg (29). Spielberg’s new film, Disclosure Day, will be released on June 12th.

Because many of his children have become successful in Hollywood like their father, Steven has been able to share his experience and offer guidance.

The Oscar-winning director shared some advice for his actor children: ‘When you audition for a role, don’t go in expecting to get it.’ He told TopMob News at the premiere of Disclosure Day in New York on June 8th, ‘Just relax, have fun, and let whatever happens, happen. If you’re too focused on getting the part, you’ll become self-conscious and nervous.’

Having children involved in his films wasn’t always part of Steven’s plan. It wasn’t until he directed E.T. in 1982, starring Drew Barrymore and Henry Thomas as children, that he realized he enjoyed working with young actors and embracing the role of a father figure on set.

At the 2022 TCM Classic Film Festival, Steven explained that working on the film made him feel very protective of his young cast, particularly six-year-old Drew. He even started to imagine having a family of his own someday. He later said he envisioned the experience inspiring his next major project.

Steven, a father of seven, truly embraced the experience. He told Vanity Fair in 2008, “I love each of my children as an individual, but I also have a big family!” Keep reading to learn more about Steven’s kids and their mothers.

Although Steven Spielberg and Amy Irving were married for just four years, their relationship actually spanned much longer. In a 2025 interview on The Hollywood Reporter‘s It Happened in Hollywood podcast, Irving shared that they were together for a total of 14 years, with a three-year break in between.

Amy Irving has appeared in films like Carrie, Yentl, and Crossing Delancey, but never in any directed by Steven Spielberg. She auditioned for the role of Marion (Karen Allen) in his 1981 film Raiders of the Lost Ark and believed she lost the part because they were going through a rough patch in their relationship, stating, “You walk out, you don’t get the part.” Despite this, they married in 1985. They divorced in 1989, with Amy later marrying Bruno Barreto and Kenneth Bowser, and Steven marrying Kate Capshaw. However, Amy has said they’ve remained close and are “very much family.”

Amy and Steven Spielberg had a son, Max Spielberg, in 1985, and they continued to co-parent him even after they separated. Like his father, Max works in a creative field—he designs video games. Max, who is a creative director at FuzzyBot, shared that Steven enjoys playing games. In a 2024 interview with MinnMax, Max explained that Steven is a big PC gamer and that they often bond over recommending games to each other.

Not wanting to play when it comes to love, Max wed Valerie Spielberg in December 2014.

Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw first met in 1984 when Kate auditioned for and won the role of Willie Scott in his film, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Although they were both in other relationships at the time, they didn’t become a couple until several years later, moving in together in 1989 after Steven’s relationship ended. They married two years after that.

Kate continued acting for a while, appearing in films like Black Rain, Just Cause, and The Love Letter, but she eventually prioritized raising their family and stepped away from acting in the early 2000s.

At a 2026 event, Steven shared how much Kate means to him, saying, “Kate has created a wonderful life for me. We’ve had seven children—including two adopted—and now have six grandchildren. That’s what truly matters.”

When Steven married Kate, he became stepfather to her daughter, Jessica Capshaw, who was born in 1976 from Kate’s previous marriage to Robert Capshaw. Jessica is an actress who has appeared in several popular shows and films. She was in Steven’s 2002 movie Minority Report, and has also starred in TV series like 9-1-1: Nashville, Grey’s Anatomy, and The Practice. Her film credits include Holidate, Dear Zoe, and Valentine.

Oh my gosh, and then she married Christopher Gavigan in 2004! I was SO happy for her! And then… the babies! Luke, Eve, Poppy, and Josephine – four beautiful kids! I’ve followed them growing up, of course, and they are all just adorable. Seriously, she’s created the perfect family, it’s amazing!

According to The New York Times, Kate adopted Theo Spielberg before she married Steven, and Steven officially adopted him after they wed. Born in 1988, Theo worked as a production assistant on Steven’s 2008 film, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and later as a researcher for the 2011 documentary Justin Bieber: Never Say Never.

A Yale graduate, Theo eventually turned to music, forming the band Wardell with his sister Sasha. He fondly remembers a game Steven used to play with them in the car when they were children. As he told Vanity Fair in 2016, “When my dad would drive us, we’d play ‘Name That Score.’ He’d put on a movie score and we’d have to guess it within five seconds.”

Sasha Spielberg, also known as the musician Buzzy Lee, is also an actress. Born in 1990 to Steven and Kate Spielberg, she’s a Brown University graduate who has acted in films like Licorice Pizza, Dude, and The Art of Getting By. She’s also appeared in some of her father’s movies, including Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and The Terminal.

As a teen, I remember sneaking off set for the day – ditching school to film felt incredibly exciting! It was a really sweet way to connect with the crew and learn the ropes. And, speaking of connections, I also met my now-husband, Harry McNally, on set, and we were married in 2022. It’s amazing how life brings people together!

Sawyer Spielberg, born in 1992, also grew up loving film. He started as a production assistant on Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, just like Theo. But following in his mother Kate’s footsteps, he became an actor, appearing in Masters of the Air, Materialists, Merry Good Enough, and Once Upon a Time in Hell’s Kitchen.

Sawyer met his wife, Raye Levine, while both were taking an acting class. They connected instantly and have been together ever since, as he shared with Tatler in 2021. Later, they expanded their family with the arrival of their daughter, Fynn, and son, Callum, as Sawyer told 27East.com in 2023.

Mikaela Spielberg, born in 1996 and adopted by Steven and Kate Spielberg, has gained public attention both for her personal life and her artistic career. In 2020, she was briefly arrested on a domestic violence charge, according to court records.

Mikaela creates digital prints and sketches, and describes herself as a versatile artist working in multiple mediums. She has also been involved with adult content platforms.

In a 2020 interview with The Daily Beast, Mikaela shared that her work has been transformative, giving her a new lease on life and even allowing her to pursue her passion for dance. She appreciates the flexibility of being able to work and dance whenever she wants.

Born in 1996, Destry Allyn Spielberg follows in the footsteps of her parents, Kate and Steven Spielberg, as both an actress and director. She’s appeared in films and series like Licorice Pizza, I Know This Much Is True, and Mass Hysteria. She’s also directed the project Please Don’t Feed the Children, along with the short films Let Me Go the Right Way and Rosie. In February 2026, Destry announced she is engaged to Jake Herskowitz.
