Okay, so ever since Pokémon Legends: Z-A came out, they brought back Mega Evolutions, and honestly, they made some Pokémon really powerful. These Mega forms have always been top-tier stat-wise, but one Pokémon really stood out as the strongest in this game. But now, with the Mega Dimensions DLC dropping new Mega Evolutions, I’m starting to think someone else might take that title!
Many consider Mega Zygarde to be the most powerful Pokémon in Legends: Z-A. This Ground and Dragon-type Legendary Pokémon becomes available as you progress through the game’s story. It boasts an incredibly high stat total of 778, and its Special Attack is among the highest of any Pokémon ever designed. While very few Pokémon can match Mega Zygarde’s offensive power, one in Mega Dimensions poses a potential challenge to its dominance.
Mega Baxcalibur Counters Mega Zygarde In Legends: Z-A’s DLC
New Mega Evolution Has The Perfect Types To Match The Legendary
The trailer for Mega Dimensions revealed two new Mega Evolutions: Mega Chimecho and Mega Baxcalibur. Mega Baxcalibur is a particularly surprising choice, given that this powerful Ice/Dragon-type Pokémon from Generation 9 is already very strong in its original game. In Legends: Z-A, Mega Baxcalibur’s Ice and Dragon typing effectively counters Mega Zygarde, making it a near-perfect rival to the overwhelmingly powerful Legendary Pokémon.
Although we don’t yet know the full stats for Mega Baxcalibur, even its regular form is surprisingly comparable to Zygarde. Typically, other Dragon-type Pokémon like Mega Dragalge or Mega Salamence in Legends: Z-A can damage Zygarde, but struggle to knock it out completely because of its high defense. However, Baxcalibur is also quite durable, meaning it can withstand attacks from Zygarde and potentially compete with it thanks to similar HP levels.
Baxcalibur is incredibly strong physically and has some of the highest HP of any Pseudo-Legendary Pokémon. Its other stats are also quite good, and its Speed is comparable to Zygarde’s base form. When it Mega Evolves, all of Baxcalibur’s stats will improve, potentially matching or even exceeding those of Mega Zygarde in certain areas.
Players Won’t Be Able To Always Rely On Zygarde Within Mega Dimensions
One Legendary Won’t Dominate Every Battle
Mega Baxcalibur naturally weakens Mega Zygarde, meaning it’s not always the best choice in Mega Dimensions battles. While Mega Zygarde is incredibly powerful and can often defeat opponents in a single hit, Mega Baxcalibur has a good chance of surviving that first attack. If Mega Baxcalibur can then attack, its Ice-type moves are likely to knock out the Legendary Pokémon.
While it’s possible Mega Zygarde can still effectively battle Mega Baxcalibur despite Baxcalibur being Ice-type, the bigger takeaway is that Mega Zygarde can’t win on its own. This encourages players to build more varied and well-rounded teams.
Mega Zygarde will likely remain a powerful Pokémon in the new DLC, but it’s not as unbeatable as it once was. We also don’t yet know if any other Pokémon will receive Mega Evolutions alongside Mega Baxcalibur. If more counters to Mega Zygarde are introduced, it could become even easier to defeat in the future.
Mega Zygarde Is (Almost) No Longer The Strongest Pokémon
More Counters Could Reduce The Overwhelming Strength Of The Game’s Mascot
Before the addition of Mega Baxcalibur, Mega Zygarde was considered the most powerful Pokémon in the game. Because older Pokémon like Mega Rayquaza weren’t available, and considering the unique battle system in Legends: Z-A, Mega Zygarde didn’t have any real competition.
However, the arrival of effective counters has challenged Mega Zygarde’s dominance, and other Pokémon are now vying for the top spot. Even without considering the new DLC content, Mega Diancie has the potential to become one of the strongest Pokémon, or at least a valuable addition to any team. Furthermore, new Mega Evolutions introduced with the DLC, similar to Mega Baxcalibur, could weaken Mega Zygarde by creating unfavorable matchups.
While Mega Baxcalibur might seem stronger than the most powerful Legendary Pokémon in the spin-off game, that remains to be seen when the downloadable content is released. Even with its boosted stats, Mega Baxcalibur might not be able to defeat Mega Zygarde in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, meaning Mega Zygarde could still be the strongest Pokémon.
