Meghan Markle has extended an olive branch to her estranged dad Thomas Markle.
Following the amputation of her father’s leg, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, has connected with him. He currently lives in the Philippines. A spokesperson for the Duchess confirmed to People magazine on December 5th that she had been in touch with him.
According to Tom Markle Jr., Meghan’s half-brother, Thomas had surgery after doctors discovered a blood clot in his leg, as reported by the Daily Mail.
In a recent interview, a 59-year-old woman described how her father is facing a difficult situation with incredible courage. She explained that his foot rapidly changed color, first turning blue and then black. After taking him to the hospital for tests, doctors determined that his leg needed to be amputated.
Despite the recent surgery, Thomas’s health challenges aren’t over. His son explained that while this procedure was critical, Thomas will also need another surgery to remove a blood clot from his left thigh.
As someone who often looks at family dynamics, I’ve been following the situation with the Markles closely. From what I understand, Tom’s sister, Samantha, feels the stress of recent years really impacted their father’s health and wellbeing. It’s a sad reminder of how deeply family pressures can affect us all.
I was speaking with a truly resilient man the other day, and he shared something that really struck me. He told me about his father, who’s 61, and all he’s overcome – two heart attacks, a stroke, and even surviving an earthquake! It just goes to show you the strength people can have, even after facing so many hardships.

I was so disappointed to hear he couldn’t make it to Meghan and Harry’s wedding in 2018. It turned out he was actually having emergency heart surgery at the time, which explained everything. It was a really tough situation for everyone involved.
There was conflict between Thomas Markle and Meghan Markle (and her mother, Doria Ragland) because he had arranged for paparazzi photos to be taken of him. He initially said he wouldn’t attend the wedding after the scandal, then changed his mind, but ultimately couldn’t go due to a health issue.
Since then, Thomas has repeatedly claimed Meghan—mother to 6-year-old Prince Archie and 4-year-old Princess Lilibet—won’t speak to him.
He recently shared with the Mail on Sunday that he’s still hurt by her continued silence. His biggest hope, he said, is to spend time with his grandchildren before it’s too late.
Thomas isn’t the only famous person who’s been open about recent health challenges. Here are some other stars who’ve shared their stories…

Nikki Bella, known from Total Bellas, shared that one of her breast implants moved after being hit during the elbow of fellow wrestler Piper Niven in a match back in July 2025.
She reassured her sister, Bella Garcia, that they would get the issue resolved eventually. She explained to the doctor that as soon as she finished her current commitment, she’d return to address the problem and ensure everything looked its best, anticipating future use. She emphasized that the current appearance wasn’t acceptable.

Lupita Nyong’o, known for her role in 12 Years a Slave, received a diagnosis of uterine fibroids—non-cancerous growths in or around the uterus—in 2014, the same year she won an Academy Award for her performance in the film.
She didn’t reveal her diagnosis until 2025, sharing on Instagram that she had been privately struggling with it for over ten years.
She explained that girls are often taught to accept period pain as a normal part of being a woman. This leaves many of us dealing with a common issue in silence and feeling like we’re facing it alone.

In July 2025, the actress from Daisy Jones & The Six revealed she was hospitalized for a hernia. This happened because she’d been wearing pants that were too tight, which caused a gap to form in her abdominal muscles.
She messaged Suki on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “You haven’t tweeted in ages!” Then, jokingly, she added, “Have you ever thought maybe I wore such tight pants six months ago that I got a hernia and I’ve been too afraid to mention it?”

In April 2025, the former star of Beverly Hills, 90210 shared that he was recovering from surgery to repair a nearly burst appendix.
Brian shared in an Instagram video that he recently experienced stomach pain which led him to the emergency room. He explained he had a perforated appendix – it hadn’t fully burst, but was very close to doing so.
He added, “I’m on the road to recovery. It’s not an easy process. This is my first major surgery.”

A Racing Louisville soccer player fell to the ground and collapsed early in the team’s game against Seattle Reign on September 14th at Lumen Field in Seattle.
According to Reuters, the U.S. Women’s National Team player sat down on the field with a teammate supporting her, and then quickly collapsed. Trainers were called to assess her condition.
The National Women’s Soccer League reported that Savannah received immediate medical attention on the field and was taken to a nearby hospital for more tests. They stated she is currently in stable condition and is alert.

Adam Devine revealed that injuries from a cement truck accident he had as a child continue to bother him now.
“It’s been a really difficult time,” Devine shared on the In Depth With Graham Bensinger podcast in 2025. “I’ve been experiencing spasms all over my body, and doctors recently told me I was facing a life-threatening situation—within the past year, actually.”
He explained that his pain is intermittent, saying his body has some minor imperfections and isn’t quite functioning as it should.

A former contestant on The Bachelor had to be hospitalized after experiencing severe back pain. He described having to crawl to get help, and said the pain worsened during a recent road trip with a friend.
He described a strange tingling sensation in his knees and toes during a March 2025 episode of his podcast, Trading Secrets. He explained that just a few weeks prior, he was able to squat 295 pounds, but now he can’t even do a single squat without falling over. He said it felt like he’d had a stroke.
But with the help of a back specialist and some steroids, he added, “We’re on the mend.”

Gina Kirschenheiter, from The Real Housewives of Orange County, revealed that her ex-husband, Matt Kirschenheiter, had a heart attack in March 2025, but he is recovering well.

In March 2025, the actor from 30 Rock experienced a medical issue at a New York Knicks game and had to be taken out of Madison Square Garden in a wheelchair.
The comedian later posted on social media to explain he’d actually gotten food poisoning and was starting to feel better.

In February 2025, the former Even Stevens star revealed she was shot in the face during a birthday celebration for her husband, Brendan Rooney. They were on a clay pigeon shooting trip when the incident occurred.
In an Instagram post, she explained that she was accidentally shot in the face by someone at a party who fired a gun unsafely. Brendan Rooney quickly helped her, evaluating her injuries and immediately taking her to the hospital. She was hit five times, and one bullet narrowly missed her right eye, coming within an inch of a direct hit.
The Kim Possible actor explained that a small piece of something got stuck behind their eye. Doctors have advised against removing it with surgery right now, and they’ll be keeping a close watch on the situation, as their vision is currently normal.
The actress expressed immense gratitude for surviving. She shared her deep love for her daughters, husband, family, and friends, explaining that she had a life-changing experience where she realized how quickly things can change. She urged everyone to cherish their loved ones and hug them whenever possible.

Amy Schumer is grateful for the internet, despite its often harsh nature, because it helped her discover a health issue. After noticing she looked “puffier” during interviews, she was surprised to see doctors commenting on her appearance online. They suggested she might have Cushing syndrome, potentially caused by high cortisol levels or steroid injections. This prompted Amy to realize she’d been receiving steroid injections after a breast reduction and C-section. Without the online comments, she wouldn’t have connected the injections to her symptoms and learned she had Cushing syndrome. She recently shared that discovering her condition would resolve on its own and that she was healthy was wonderful news.

In December 2024, an AHL player suffered a skate cut during a game and needed 25 stitches to close the wound. After his son made a full recovery, New Jersey Devils general manager Tom Fitzgerald told ESPN how grateful they were, saying, “We feel very lucky, and I wouldn’t want any parent to go through that.”

In March 2022, Hailey Bieber experienced a frightening health scare while having breakfast with her husband, Justin Bieber. She suddenly began to have stroke-like symptoms, struggling to speak and noticing her face drooping. Although her symptoms briefly subsided, she went to the hospital for evaluation. Doctors discovered she had a small blood clot in her brain, which they identified as a TIA, or transient ischemic attack. Further testing at UCLA revealed Hailey had a hole in her heart, called a patent foramen ovale (PFO). This hole allowed the blood clot to travel to her brain, causing the TIA. Hailey has since undergone a successful procedure to close the PFO and is now recovering well.

The same year Hailey faced a health issue, Justin also experienced one. In June 2022, he revealed he had been diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt syndrome, which caused temporary paralysis on one side of his face. This forced him to cancel the remaining dates of his Justice World Tour.
In a video posted to Instagram, Justin explained that the virus affected the nerves in his ear and face, preventing him from blinking, smiling, or moving his nostril on the affected side. He also shared that it was becoming increasingly difficult for him to eat.
Fortunately, the paralysis eventually went away. Hailey shared on Good Morning America that Justin was recovering well, adding that while the situation was frightening and unexpected, he was going to be okay and she was grateful he was fine.

Jamie Foxx recently shared details about the serious health scare he experienced in April 2023, which he had previously kept private. In his 2024 Netflix special, What Had Happened Was…, he explained that he was suffering from a severe headache when he suddenly lost consciousness. He doesn’t remember the next twenty days.
Initially, a doctor gave him a cortisone shot and sent him home, but his sister, Deidra Dixon, was worried and took him to the hospital. There, they discovered he had a brain bleed that caused a stroke.
After surgery, Jamie woke up in a wheelchair on May 4th, unable to walk. He then traveled to Chicago for extensive rehabilitation and therapy. He expressed deep gratitude for the prayers he received, saying he needed every single one.

The reality TV star shared that she briefly stopped breathing while running a mile during the first challenge on the NBC competition show.
She shared on the show Fit for TV: The Reality of The Biggest Loser that her memory of the event was fragmented. She recalled hearing a helicopter, feeling like she was floating, and then seeing her grandfather. After that, she remembers only darkness, followed by light, which led her to realize she had died that day.
She explained that her organs were failing. She hadn’t known she had rhabdomyolysis, a condition where the body essentially starts to shut down.

Emilia Clarke, known for her role in Game of Thrones, revealed a harrowing health battle in a 2019 essay for The New Yorker. While filming the show, she experienced a severe headache during a workout, quickly followed by intense pain and vomiting. She realized something was seriously wrong with her brain.
A hospital scan revealed she had suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage – a life-threatening stroke caused by bleeding around the brain – resulting from a ruptured aneurysm. She underwent immediate surgery to repair it, but the pain was excruciating. During her recovery, she struggled with aphasia, leaving her unable to speak coherently.
After a week, her speech returned, and she was discharged from the hospital a month later. However, a 2013 scan revealed the aneurysm had grown, requiring a second surgery. This operation was unsuccessful, leading to a massive bleed and putting her life at risk. Doctors had to perform a more invasive surgery, accessing her brain directly through her skull.
Fortunately, Emilia has since made a full recovery and says she is now at 100%.

Cori Broadus, Snoop Dogg’s daughter, recently shared her gratitude for her family’s support during a health crisis. In January 2024, she suffered a stroke and immediately reached out to her loved ones, sending them a picture and a text message. She told TopMob News that everyone quickly came to her aid. Cori ended up staying in the hospital longer than expected due to complications from lupus and kidney issues. Thankfully, she is now recovering well. “I’m doing great,” she said, adding that she’s been working to regain some motor skills but is otherwise feeling good.

Shailene Woodley struggled with significant health issues throughout her early twenties. In a September 2024 podcast interview, she revealed she experienced hearing loss, debilitating fatigue – unable to walk for more than five minutes without needing hours of rest – and persistent stomach pain. She faced a confusing array of diagnoses and conflicting advice from doctors.
Determined to find answers, Woodley, who has a background in herbalism and holistic health, sought guidance from both traditional doctors and alternative healers. This search for well-being spanned a decade.
She explained that the physical discomfort led to deeper issues, including fear of food and struggles with body image, identity, and feeling comfortable in her own body.
Ultimately, after years of addressing both her physical and mental health, Woodley is now healthy and feeling much better. She is grateful to be able to say she has resolved the issues and is in a good place.
