Meghan Markle’s Representative Denies Rumors of Taking $1,700 Dress

Reports have emerged alleging that Meghan Markle took a $1,700 dress without authorization from a 2022 photoshoot. Her representative has now responded to deny these claims.

A representative stated to People magazine that claims items were taken without permission are untrue and damaging to Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex’s, reputation. She emphasized that any items kept were done openly and legally, with full agreement from stylists and in line with contracts. The representative called the suggestion otherwise ‘categorically false and highly defamatory’.

The photoshoot was for publicity for Meghan Markle’s Netflix show, With Love, Meghan. She wore a green dress by Galvan, called the Ushuaia. People started talking about it because she’d worn the same dress three years earlier for a session with Variety. It’s not clear why so many believed she hadn’t returned the dress, especially since her representative said she could have easily kept it.

Industry experts have largely come to Meghan Markle’s defense, explaining that it’s standard practice for people to keep clothes from photoshoots to prevent unauthorized sales. This has happened with other royals before, making it even more likely in her case. However, the royal family doesn’t simply give away the clothes; Markle had to get permission and also paid for the items she kept. After becoming a working royal in 2018, she received a budget specifically to cover retaining certain pieces from photoshoots.

Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, initially wore the dress for a photoshoot with Variety and an interview remembering Queen Elizabeth II after her death. Even though she and the Queen had a difficult relationship, Meghan spoke highly of the late monarch, expressing great respect for her as both a person and a leader. She shared, “It’s wonderful to consider the incredible legacy his grandmother left in so many areas. She was truly the best example of female leadership. I’m so grateful I had the chance to spend time with her and get to know her.”

The holiday special of Meghan Markle’s Netflix series, With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration, will be available to stream on December 3, 2025.
