According to Phison’s CEO, Pua Khein-Seng, the shortage of memory chips that could postpone the release of the PlayStation 6 might last for up to another decade.
As someone who buys a lot of tech, I figured the guy from Malaysia would be in the know. His company makes all sorts of storage stuff – SSDs, USB drives, you name it. So he’d definitely have the inside scoop.
The recent surge in RAM prices, largely driven by high demand from AI companies, is now starting to affect other memory types as well, including those made by companies like Phison.
Khein-Seng, in an interview originally given in Chinese, predicts that several consumer electronics companies will fail due to a shortage of memory chips.
He expects a major drop in the manufacturing of smartphones, TVs, and computers, and it’s likely gaming consoles will be affected too.
Sony currently has the parts it needs to manufacture consoles through 2026, but the future beyond that is uncertain. This has led to speculation that the PlayStation 6 might be delayed past its expected 2027 launch.
I was reading about the new Nvidia Rubin AI GPUs, and it’s kind of mind-blowing! Apparently, each one needs a massive 20TB SSD. If Nvidia ships out a lot of these – we’re talking tens of millions – it could actually use up around 20% of all the NAND flash memory chips made in the world next year. That’s a huge chunk of production, and it really highlights how much storage these AI systems need!
This would leave companies like Sony competing for the remaining 80% of the market, likely causing prices to increase significantly.
The most discouraging thing is the executive doesn’t foresee any positive changes until 2030, and he believes the current problems could continue for another decade.
So, even if you think Sony should postpone the PlayStation 6, the actual delay could be much longer than you expect. It could impact the console’s release far beyond what seems reasonable right now.
Okay, so I’m hearing this from a pretty reliable source, but it’s still just a guess for now. We’ll have to wait and see what actually happens, but honestly, things aren’t looking great for the PS6. It sounds like we might be in trouble!
