Mephisto Needs His Own MCU TV Spinoff (Like Agatha)

[Note: This article discloses spoilers for Ironheart Episode 6 titled “The Past Is the Past.”]

Mephisto has made his grand entrance into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, leaving fans eager for more from this captivating character. In the finale of Ironheart, we witnessed Mephisto (portrayed by Sacha Baron Cohen) interact with Parker Robbins (Anthony Ramos) and Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne). During these enthralling scenes, Mephisto hinted at his ability to help people achieve their wildest dreams. He revealed that he has struck deals with every member of the Forbes 100 Richest, along with “fourteen kings, three popes, and a Beatle”. In the episode’s closing scene, it seems as though Riri is joining these ranks, striking a bargain with Mephisto to resurrect her friend Natalie Washington – not just as an AI but as the real Natalie herself. With the potential repercussions of Riri’s deal with Mephisto set to unfold in either another season of Ironheart or another MCU series, and Cohen’s versatile acting skills bringing Mephisto to life, a standalone Mephisto spinoff series has become a highly desirable prospect.

Mephisto Has the History & Power Set to Sustain a Solo Series

A standalone series featuring Mephisto, who first appeared as an enemy of Silver Surfer in 1968, could draw from a wealth of comic book material beyond his relationships with Riri and Parker Robbins. Initially, he tempted the Silver Surfer by offering him a way to reunite with Shalla-Bal, his love from Zenn-La. Although the Silver Surfer resisted, Mephisto continued to trouble various Marvel characters. For instance, he played a role in creating Ghost Rider by binding Johnny Blaze’s soul with the fire demon Zarathos, granting Blaze his fiery powers. Moreover, Mephisto has been a persistent antagonist for Peter Parker (Spider-Man), particularly during the “One More Day” storyline published in 2007, where he destroyed Peter and Mary Jane Watson’s marriage. It was later revealed that their daughter, Mayday Parker, is Mephisto’s arch-nemesis. With numerous other heroes and villains in the Marvel universe having crossed paths with Mephisto, there’s a rich tapestry of stories waiting to be explored for a potential series focusing on this character.

Beyond what we’ve already seen, Mephisto possesses an extraordinary arsenal of abilities that warrant deeper examination. The transformations and magic showcased in “Ironheart” are just the beginning; the brief glimpse of Mephisto’s true form leaves us yearning for a full exploration of his demonic might. Mephisto boasts superhuman agility, endurance, and a healing factor that supports his immortality. In addition to reading minds, he can also teleport, exert psychokinetic force, traverse dreams, and control reality through his devil’s deals. His mastery over hellfire, time manipulation, reality warping through his bargains, and cosmic understanding across different timelines make him a formidable adversary. Witnessing how an adversary could exploit Mephisto’s vulnerabilities – such as the necessity of a deal to affect free will, or the dependence of his powers on his presence in his home realm – would undoubtedly make for an exhilarating viewing experience.

SBC Has The Star Power to Sustain a Mephisto Spinoff Show

The success of Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness in shows like “WandaVision” and “Agatha All Along” has shown Marvel a potential direction for a spinoff featuring Mephisto, given their shared supernatural setting from series such as the “Doctor Strange” films. Similarly, Sacha Baron Cohen, well-known for his comedic character Borat, demonstrated his versatility as an actor by earning an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor in 2020’s drama “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” This versatility makes him a strong candidate to headline a series as a complex and captivating antihero, capable of skillfully blending the darkness and menace of the character with his comedic talents.

Considering Mephisto’s background and abilities, we can expect a series where he engages in deal-making and debt collection, featuring both established Marvel Cinematic Universe characters and those mentioned by Mephisto to Riri in Ironheart. Ideally, the Mephisto spinoff would resemble a blend of Loki, Agatha All Along, and Fox/Netflix’s Lucifer, with a devil possessing powers of persuasion as the main focus. It’s clear that Mephisto will return to the MCU; given his rich history and the talented actor portraying him, it would be fitting for a spinoff series to delve deeper into these aspects.

All six episodes of Ironheart are streaming on Disney+.
