Meryl Streep Reveals Colin Firth’s NSFW Joke on Mamma Mia Set

Mamma mia, Colin Firth needed to take a moment when he first saw costar Pierce Brosnan in spandex. 

Meryl Streep, who acted with the performer in both Mamma Mia! (2008) and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018), said the Oscar winner made a playful, suggestive comment after seeing him in a very tight outfit while filming the “Dancing Queen” and “Waterloo” scenes.

During an April appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, she playfully remarked that Colin Firth never quite got over wearing spandex. She recalled seeing both Firth and Pierce Brosnan emerge from the dressing rooms and sizing each other up.

Meryl continued, “And Colin said, ‘I need socks.'”

As for the rumored Mamma Mia! threequel? The 76-year-old will take it all, quipping, “Damn yes!”

Meryl Streep isn’t the only star hoping for another film in the musical series featuring ABBA’s music. Pierce Brosnan, who played one of her love interests in the movie, also expressed his enthusiasm for a sequel.

We had an amazing time making this movie – it was unbelievably fun,” he said in a 2023 interview with TopMob News. He also hinted that they plan to make one more film to complete a series of three.

Pierce Brosnan believes the cast – including Amanda Seyfried, Stellan Skarsgård, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters, and Dominic Cooper – would be eager to make another sequel. He says there’s a lot of warmth and happiness surrounding the project, and he’s confident there are still stories to tell.

Amanda confirmed that her former colleagues are all enthusiastic about the possibility of appearing together on screen again, telling TopMob last year they had all expressed their support with a ‘yes’.

She explained that this is how they promote their work and gain backing. Major films depend heavily on the studio’s schedule and release plans.

Judy Craymer, the creative force behind Mamma Mia! The Musical and all things related to the franchise, is also involved and has confirmed that a script for a third movie already exists.

She told Deadline last May that the film’s creators have a clear vision for the project and are committed to making it happen. She also shared that the cast quickly formed strong bonds and genuine friendships during the process.
