According to a recent announcement on January 7th, the social media company once known as Facebook (now Meta) intends to switch from using third-party fact-checkers to a community notes system similar to that used by its competitor, with the goal of fostering “free expression”.
Meta plans to remove limitations on discussions centered around topics widely recognized in public debate, with the aim of intensifying action against illegal or severe infractions, and allowing users greater flexibility when handling political content, according to their statement.
Over the past few years, we’ve been creating more intricate content management systems for our platforms, largely due to societal and political demands for content moderation. However, as per a recent Meta blog post, this strategy may have overstepped its bounds.
As a crypto investor, I’ve noticed that over time, we’ve grown so much that we’re now committing too many errors, causing frustration for our users, and unfortunately, hindering the very freedom of expression we initially aimed to promote.
Meta announced that the updates will impact Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger (Threads). Together, these social media outlets cater to a vast global user base numbering in billions.
In simple terms, starting from 2023, Meta plans to transition from outsourcing content moderation to users, much like how Elon Musk introduced a community notes program on X (formerly Twitter) following his purchase of the social media platform.
Meta stated that in the case of platform X, they’ve found success by allowing their community to judge whether posts might be misleading and require additional context, and a variety of viewpoints determine what kind of context would be beneficial for others to understand.
Divergent perspectives
Musk has expressed support for Meta’s changes, describing them as “cool” in a Jan. 7 X post.
On the social network Bluesky, American businessman Mark Cuban asserted that Meta was attempting to win Trump’s goodwill, who is known for championing free speech.
Additionally, Cuban proposed that Meta could leverage unconfined social media data for the advancement of its artificial intelligence projects.
As an analyst, I would rephrase this statement as follows: I understand that Meta now has the freedom to make uninhibited changes to posts previously subject to limitations, resulting in a more straightforward portrayal. This, in turn, allows them to fine-tune their AI models further.
In the U.S. elections held in November, Elon Musk expressed his support for Donald Trump. He is now expected to actively participate in Trump’s presidency, taking on the role of head at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). This department is a private endeavor aimed at reducing unnecessary government expenditures.
Cuban openly supported Vice President Kamala Harris, who was a major contender against Trump during his presidential campaign.
