Metacritic Reveals the Worst-Rated Game of 2025 (and It Shouldn’t Surprise You)

2025 saw a lot of great games, including smaller successes like Despelote and Metal Eden, as well as major releases from big studios such as Ghost of Yotei and Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. However, not every game is a winner. Metacritic, a well-known review site, recently published a list of the worst-rated games, and the one at the very bottom won’t be shocking to anyone who’s been following the industry.

Metacritic compiled a list of poorly received games, many of which are obscure. However, one title likely rings a bell: MindsEye, an open-world game that unfortunately earned the distinction of being the worst-reviewed game of 2025. It received an average score of just 28, a full nine points lower than the next game on the list. Here are the other games and their average scores:

  1. MindsEye (28)
  2. Fire Emblem Shadows (37)
  3. Blood of Mehran (38)
  4. Spy Drops (39)
  5. Gore Doctor (40)
  6. Tamagotchi Plaza – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition (43)
  7. Ambulance Life: A Paramedic Simulator (44)
  8. QUByte Classics: Glover (44)
  9. Scar-Lead Salvation (44)
  10. Fast & Furious: Arcade Edition (45)

MindsEye Has Been Patched Heavily Since Launch

Man, the launch of my studio’s game was a disaster. It started with terrible word of mouth, awful reviews, and even accusations that someone was deliberately trying to mess with us. People were asking for refunds left and right. Things got even worse after that – we had to lay off between 250 and 300 people. Honestly, the leadership was a big part of the problem. Some of us felt like we constantly had to bend to whatever the bosses wanted, and it just wasn’t a good environment.

When MindsEye first launched, it received a lot of criticism for its small world, many technical issues, unchallenging enemies, confusing late-game content, basic shooting mechanics, and unoriginal story. While major changes seem unlikely, the developers at Build A Rocket Boy have released updates to try and improve the game. These updates include rebalancing difficulty, improving cover shooting, allowing players to skip cutscenes and long travel sections, adjusting aim assist, adding new side missions, including more save points, removing some annoying vehicle types, and increasing the amount of ammo available – along with many other smaller improvements.

Despite significant updates, MindsEye still isn’t receiving much positive attention, and it’s unlikely things will change dramatically. However, Build A Rocket Boy has expressed gratitude to players for their feedback, stating that all comments – good or bad – have been valuable in improving the game. Whether these improvements will be noticeable remains to be seen, but the team continues to work hard despite the game’s ongoing struggles.
