Hideo Kojima, known for popular games like the Metal Gear series and Death Stranding, has considered what it would be like to create a massive commercial success. However, in a recent interview with Ananweb (translated by Genki_JPN), he explained that he doesn’t view creating best-selling games as his primary goal.
In a recent interview, Kojima shared a daydream of one day creating a hugely successful product, then casually visiting the company behind it to see how things are going. But he quickly added that he’d probably find that life pretty dull without having a project to work on. He imagines himself simply watching Blu-rays at home. Ultimately, he expressed a strong desire to remain actively involved in creative work himself.
He explained that creating popular products isn’t what motivates him. He’d quickly become restless and bored at home, simply watching movies. He misses the collaborative aspect of his work – the ability to connect with and discuss ideas with others. Ultimately, he wants to continue working with his hands and being actively engaged in projects for as long as possible.
During the interview, Kojima also discussed the projects currently in development at Kojima Productions: the stealth game Physint and the horror title OD. He explained that, given his extensive experience, creating a typical espionage game would be easy. To avoid this, the Physint team is actively brainstorming innovative features to make the game stand out from others.
We’re actively trying to move away from trends that feel artificial,” he said. “This game has some new features, and we’re also exploring how to blend filmmaking with game development. I’d like to involve not only actors from film, but also the film crew in the game’s production – though it’s still to be seen how well that will work.
Things are changing so fast these days that the ideas and societal issues I’m exploring in the game could actually happen in real life before I even finish making it.
Kojima didn’t share much about OD, but he did say the game will feature completely new elements. His studio is working to fundamentally change how the game is offered as a service.
Kojima explained that while he’s not ready to reveal details just yet, and success isn’t guaranteed, his team is attempting something truly new. While previous games like stealth and delivery titles were innovative in their gameplay, they still followed familiar structures. This new project aims to completely rethink how the game is delivered as a service, making it a significant undertaking. Kojima hinted that the recently released trailer contains clues, encouraging fans to analyze it closely to uncover more information.

Hideo Kojima says he hopes to continue directly creating games for as long as possible. He’s even daydreamed about one day returning to a studio after a long absence, simply to check in on everyone, after having created a massive hit. However, simply achieving best-selling status isn’t his primary goal.
