Metal Gear Solid 4 and Peace Walker Have Been Taken Down From PS3 Store

So, Konami just announced Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2, which is awesome, but it’s kinda weird. They’ve pulled the original digital versions of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots off the PlayStation Store. I noticed it because a fellow gamer, Odd-Ticket-6577 on Reddit, pointed it out. They were still up for PS3 owners a few days ago, but now they’re gone. It’s a little confusing timing with the new collection coming out, but hey, that’s Konami for ya!

Xbox players have also reported that Peace Walker HD is no longer available on the Microsoft Store. The game was playable on Xbox consoles through backwards compatibility, as it was included in the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection originally released for Xbox 360. That collection featured Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence (which also allowed access to the original Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake), and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker.

Last week, a second collection of classic Metal Gear Solid games was announced. Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 will include the remaining games in the main series that weren’t previously available on current gaming systems. This collection also brings Metal Gear: Ghost Babel to consoles for the first time in over 20 years, as it was originally only released for the Game Boy Color.

The game Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and the new Switch 2 on August 27th.

The Steam page for the game collection details the PC hardware needed to play, and it’s surprising that it requires at least 16 GB of RAM. Considering Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots ran on the PS3 with only 512 MB of RAM, and Peace Walker on the PSP with just 32 or 64 MB, this higher RAM requirement suggests the game will feature significant visual improvements.

It’s also possible the games aren’t actually being rebuilt for modern systems, but are instead being played through emulation. This could explain why the game requires decent hardware, as emulation software itself often needs significant processing power and memory to run smoothly.

Konami has announced that while the online multiplayer for Metal Gear Solid 4 won’t be restored, the cooperative online mode in Peace Walker will still be available in the Master Collection Vol. 2. This is a positive addition because Peace Walker includes many optional missions designed similarly to quests in Monster Hunter. However, Konami hasn’t confirmed if the Monster Hunter collaboration missions, which featured hunting monsters like Rathalos, will be included in the Master Collection Vol. 2.

Both Metal Gear Solid 4 and Peace Walker add crucial details to the overall Metal Gear storyline. Metal Gear Solid 4 concludes Solid Snake’s journey, neatly tying up all loose ends. Meanwhile, Peace Walker shows us how Naked Snake from Metal Gear Solid 3 evolved into Big Boss, and its ending directly sets the stage for the events in Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes.
