Metal Gear Solid Delta’s Dismal PS5 Pro Support Could Use a Rethink

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but express my excitement about Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater’s remarkable journey into the modern era! This masterpiece has been given a stunning visual makeover that breathes new life into its classic charm. Some might label it as a safe move, but in our review, we hailed it as the perfect way to immerse yourself in Hideo Kojima’s legendary espionage adventure like never before.

However, it has room for improvement, as indicated by Digital Foundry’s review, it seems that Virtuous’ development team still has tasks ahead.

On the PlayStation 5’s standard version, the game employs dynamic resolution scaling that fluctuates between 720p and 1080p at a steady 60 frames per second (fps), and 1080p to 1584p at a smoother 30fps. However, it’s unfortunate that the 60fps mode may drop down to 40fps when you dive underwater, and the higher resolution mode suffers from inconsistent frame pacing.

The PS5 Pro struggles to find a balance: it aims to deliver top performance and superior quality, yet falls short in both areas. Its dynamic resolution fluctuates between 756p and 1152p. To enhance the image, it employs its own AI technology, PSSR.

Since the initial resolution is quite poor, the upscaler finds it challenging to distinguish details from a distance, leading to potential shimmering and artifacting.

As a gamer, I’ve noticed that the PS5 Pro doesn’t quite live up to the global illumination and shadow quality showcased in the standard PS5’s high-quality mode. While it aims for a smooth 60fps, I’ve found that it sometimes falls short, dipping below even 40fps in certain situations. However, it seems to perform slightly better when it comes to indoor gaming environments.

One important point to highlight is that this game is powered by Unreal Engine 5, however, Epic’s technology has been posing optimization challenges. Regardless, we expect superior performance, particularly on the PS5 Pro, as a standard.

Absolutely, since the game isn’t releasing until August 28th, there’s a chance that Virtuous could release a launch-day patch to address many of these issues before the game goes live. Fingers crossed for this, because we highly recommend this game and it would be great if it runs smoothly from the get-go.
