In a recent Famitsu interview, the developers of Metroid Prime 4 revealed the game takes place chronologically between Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion. This means the events of Metroid Prime 4 happen before those in Metroid Dread, the most recent 2D Metroid game released in 2021. The interview also highlighted that Metroid Prime 4 is designed to have its own independent story and setting, rather than being closely tied to the 2D Metroid games.

This new timeline information for Metroid Prime 4 is surprisingly engaging, especially considering where it positions Samus in relation to the other games. As one of the few titles following Super Metroid and Metroid: Other M, it sets this latest game towards the end of the overall Metroid series, but still after the events of the original Metroid Prime games, which have always felt somewhat separate from the main storyline.

However, the more seasoned Samus in Metroid Prime 4 actually fits the game’s story better.
