The accolades continue to pour in, and after a remarkable performance at the Oscars this weekend, another award has been added to the collection. The iconic horror film cleverly subverted classic vampire tropes, delivering scares and thrills of all types.
The film recently achieved significant recognition, winning four Academy Awards – a remarkable feat second only to Leonardo DiCaprio’s acclaimed film, which won six, including Best Picture. Notably, it narrowly beat Delroy Lindo from Sinners for the Best Supporting Actor award, with Sean Penn ultimately taking home the prize.
Just a day after its return, the movie Sinners is once again a streaming hit. It’s surpassed all films on HBO Max, landing in the top 7 most-streamed movies in 49 countries—and the top 3 in 43 of them. It’s currently the most-streamed movie in the United States, nearly a year after it was first released in theaters.
I’m really excited to see that Sinners is currently the number one show on Prime Video here in the US! It totally deserves the buzz, too – it’s officially ‘Certified Fresh’ on Rotten Tomatoes with incredible scores from both critics (97%) and regular viewers like me (96%).
What Oscars Did Sinners Win in 2026?
As we discussed, Sinners rightfully won four Academy Awards this weekend. While it might have had a chance to equal or even surpass One Battle After Another – especially for Best Supporting Actor – it still couldn’t overcome the tendency for horror films to be overlooked for the Best Picture award.
The Silence of the Lambs, released in 1991 and starring Jodie Foster and Sir Anthony Hopkins, remains the only horror movie to ever win the top award. Hopkins played the chilling role of Hannibal Lecter, a cannibalistic serial killer.
But, for Sinners, it was still a historic evening.
- Michael B. Jordan: Best Actor (his first Oscar)
- Ryan Coogler: Best Original Screenplay (his first Oscar)
- Ludwig Göransson: Best Original Score (his third Oscar)
- Autumn Durald Arkapaw: Best Cinematography (the first woman to ever win this award)
Jordan is only the sixth Black actor to receive the Best Actor award, and his performance in the horror film alongside Hopkins demonstrates the incredible impact of his portrayal of the twin characters, Smoke and Stack.
Will There Be a Sequel or Prequel to Sinners?
With the huge success of Sinners, it’s not surprising Hollywood is already thinking about sequels. They have a history of continuing popular movies – think Saw, Scream, Friday the 13th, and A Nightmare on Elm Street – as long as they keep making money.
As a huge fan of Ryan Coogler’s work – I loved Black Panther and Wakanda Forever – I’ve been following Sinners closely. He’s made it clear he doesn’t want to turn this into a franchise like so many others. He’s already shut down any talk of sequels or prequels, even though everyone’s dying to know more about Jack O’Connell’s incredibly compelling and mysterious vampire character, Remmick. He really wants this to be a standalone story, and I respect that.
Ryan Coogler recently explained to Ebony Magazine that after working on several big-budget franchise films, he wanted to focus on a more personal and original project. He was eager to create something unique and fresh for audiences.
He described his film, Sinners, as a complete and satisfying experience, like a full-course meal with everything you need from start to finish. He intentionally crafted it to be a self-contained, finished work, and that was his goal throughout the entire process.
Okay, so here’s the deal – there won’t be any follow-up movies to Sinners, which honestly, as a horror fan, is a little disappointing! But if I want to see more, and clearly a lot of us do, we’re all rushing to HBO Max right now to rewatch it and soak up all the creepy goodness. It’s the only way to get another dose!
