Michael B. Jordan’s Award-Worthy Evolution From Soaps to Sinners

Michael B. Jordan is such a talented actor that filmmakers decided to give him the challenge of playing two characters in one project.

The 38-year-old actor, nominated for Best Actor at both the Critics Choice Awards on January 4th and the Golden Globes on January 11th for his role as the charming twins Smoke and Stack in Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, doesn’t take any of his success for granted.

Speaking with TopMob News at the Critics Choice Association’s celebration in December, Jordan expressed his gratitude, saying, “After 13 years working professionally, this is definitely one of the highlights of my career.”

Ryan Coogler expected to find Michael B. Jordan there. While Black Panther remains their biggest commercial success with $1.3 billion in box office revenue, this new project is the one they’re most proud of creatively. Sinners—a complex story about the segregated South in 1932, presented as a violent vampire horror film—is an original idea from Coogler, and it likely wouldn’t have been made without Jordan’s involvement.

Honestly, it’s amazing to me how much thought Ryan Coogler put into everything for Michael B. Jordan! He specifically created those characters, Smoke and Stack – these guys who go back to Mississippi, trying to build a legitimate life opening a club after being involved with the Chicago mob – just for Michael. It’s like the whole story was built around showcasing him, and it’s just… perfect!

Michael B. Jordan initially felt hesitant about the idea of playing twins in the film, but quickly became both nervous and excited. He trusts director Ryan Coogler implicitly, noting that Coogler thoroughly considers his ideas before presenting them. Jordan explained that when Coogler tells him he’s written something specifically for him, it’s impossible not to be inspired as an actor.

Although Sinners presented his greatest artistic challenge yet, Jordan has consistently proven himself capable since childhood, much like his heartbreaking role as young Wallace on The Wire over 23 years ago continues to resonate with viewers.

I’ve been a fan of Michael B. Jordan for years, and it’s amazing to look back at how he started! He actually got his first real exposure on All My Children back in 2003, appearing in 58 episodes. Then, before his big break, he did guest spots on shows like CSI and Cold Case. But honestly, I think his role as Vince Howard on Friday Night Lights in 2009 was when everyone really started to notice him – he was incredible as that football star!

Suffice it to say, things worked out in his favor.

He believes the large and dedicated fanbase built by AMC, along with the positive reviews he received for The Wire, were both major factors in the opportunities he was given.

He told People magazine in November that the experience led to opportunities he never anticipated. “Looking back,” he said, “it really surprised me. I wasn’t expecting any of it.”

From my years in the industry, especially working on shows like AMC, you learn to pick up lines incredibly quickly. I’m talking about memorizing scenes one day and filming them the next – it’s all about being prepared for a super fast turnaround! It really trains you to be on your game.

Jordan shared that working on soap operas, where they produce over a hundred pages of script daily, instilled in him a strong work ethic and helped him develop discipline from a young age.

Interestingly, Michael B. Jordan ended up taking over the role of Reggie Montgomery on AMC after Chadwick Boseman, who was five years older, decided the part wasn’t right for him. Boseman wanted to pursue roles that would set a higher standard for Black actors.

Jordan later came to feel the same way, telling GQ in 2015, “I had no father figure, no mother, and was offered a really cliché role as a Black character on a soap opera. I recognized the stereotype, and from then on, I decided I didn’t want to take roles like that.”

Regarding Black Panther, starring Chadwick Boseman as the hero and Michael B. Jordan as his rival, their opinions were completely different.

In 2019, Michael B. Jordan told The Wrap that he hoped the film Black Panther would create opportunities for future actors, just as previous generations of actors had paved the way for him and his peers.

Jordan was thinking about Chadwick Boseman, who sadly passed away from cancer in 2020, while he prepared to play the roles of Smoke and Stack. He wanted to deliver a performance that would pay tribute to their friendship.

Jordan told Deadline that recreating Chadwick Boseman’s manner of speaking throughout the film was challenging, and he wanted to deliver a performance that felt as authentic as Boseman’s own. He also expressed deep respect and connection with Boseman, often finding himself wondering, ‘What would he do?’ Jordan described the experience as a significant step forward in his own development as an actor, something he needed to cultivate for the future.

There’s no doubt that Boseman would be beyond proud.

Jordan shared with TopMob News that he’s always been driven to excel and be successful at something. He didn’t know what that ‘something’ would be when he was young, but through a series of small achievements and a constant focus on moving forward, he’s arrived where he is today. He admits it all feels a bit unreal, saying, ‘Who could have dreamed this?’

The only potential issue with Jordan continuing his successful partnership with Coogler—a collaboration that started with the 2013 film Fruitvale Station and now has them both being considered for Oscars—is that he might feel he’s already experienced everything this kind of project has to offer.

During an interview with Deadline, Ryan Coogler jokingly told the actor that he might eventually run out of difficult roles for him. He imagined a scenario where even the script supervisor would suggest he play triplets in a future film.

Though if that’s the case, Jordan’s got more than enough talent to go around.

Seriously, how does one person even do that?! I’m still amazed!
