Michael B. Jordan continues to receive accolades for his performance as Erik Killmonger, but he’s recently discussed the impact playing the film’s villain had on his mental well-being.
Jordan shared with CBS Sunday Morning that Black Panther stayed with him for a while after filming. He found it helpful to go to therapy and process his experience, realizing he needed to actively unwind after immersing himself in a character. He explained that there isn’t a set method for doing this. Acting, he noted, is often a solitary process – from self-taped auditions to individual preparation – and it’s a journey of learning. He came to understand that it was important to address any lingering emotional weight by talking things through.
Jordan discussed his preparation for the role of Killmonger, and how playing the character affected him personally. He explained that Killmonger lacked love and experienced a lot of betrayal due to failing systems, and Jordan wondered how his character could overcome this cycle of negativity, considering how history often repeats itself. To truly understand Killmonger’s perspective, Jordan also shared that he distanced himself from his family and intentionally limited his communication with them.
According to People magazine, Jordan shared that he started going to therapy after a particularly challenging role. He found it so helpful that it led to a broader journey of self-discovery. He believes therapy is important for everyone, especially men. Jordan encourages anyone considering therapy to go for it, saying he’s proud of his own experience and feels it’s made him a better, more well-rounded communicator – both internally and externally. He emphasized that there’s no shame in seeking help.
Black Panther Still Remains Present In The Marvel Cinematic Universe
The 2018 film Black Panther was a groundbreaking achievement for superhero movies. Marvel Studios finally gave the Black Panther (played by Chadwick Boseman) the spotlight he deserved, expanding on the character’s rich history. Following Boseman’s tragic death, the role of Black Panther was taken on by Shuri (Letitia Wright) in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Marvel Studios is increasingly focusing on the world of Wakanda within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, going beyond the stories of Black Panther and his rival, Erik Killmonger. They’ve expanded this focus with a new streaming series called Eyes of Wakanda, which premiered in August 2025 and highlights the diverse warriors of Wakanda through a series of standalone stories.
A third Black Panther movie is officially happening, and Letitia Wright will reprise her role as Shuri. Details about the story are still scarce, but it’s anticipated to tie into the larger future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Black Panther is streaming on Disney+.
