As a devoted movie buff, I can’t help but acknowledge that I, Michael C. Hall, have found myself in an unusual situation – the Dexter franchise, of which I am a part, has made the same mistake, or rather, opportunity, multiple times across its various adaptations. It’s not everyday you see a show get a revival, be it through a sequel series or a spin-off. But to have two sequel shows? That’s where Dexter stands apart. With four shows under its belt now, we have the original eight-season series, the limited-series revival titled “Dexter: New Blood”, the prequel series featuring a younger cast called “Dexter: Original Sin”, and most recently, another sequel series named “Dexter: Resurrection”.
Some might label this as overexploitation, but the franchise’s popularity seems to be far from drained. It’s an intriguing turn of events, isn’t it?
The revival series “Dexter: Resurrection” offers an exciting continuation, where Dexter’s Dark Passenger is accepted rather than avoided. It leverages its 20-year history as a narrative tool, revealing long-hidden secrets and creating breathtaking full-circle moments. Remarkably, the original ending of “Dexter” was intentionally left open for a return, allowing for Dexter’s comeback. This decision, though contentious, ultimately led to this revival on Showtime.
Dexter Actor Michael C. Hall Acknowledges “Unsatisfying” Endings for Both Shows
In a conclusive manner, “Dexter: New Blood” wrapped up Dexter Morgan’s tale by having his son take his life. This resolution was intended to satisfy fans who felt that the initial series didn’t offer a proper conclusion. However, it also sparked strong reactions from viewers. Now, it seems we may see another attempt at wrapping this story with “Dexter: Resurrection,” potentially for the last time.
In an interview with Screen Rant, actor Michael C. Hall admitted that the show’s endings have been challenging, but he has taken a valuable lesson from the experience. Regarding the original Dexter ending, Hall refrained from using the term “divisive” and instead emphasized that it was extremely dissatisfying.
Hall expressed that the outcome was extremely disappointing. It made sense from a storytelling perspective for him to go into self-imposed exile, but it wasn’t what anyone had hoped for or desired. In fact, it wasn’t how anyone wanted things to conclude, and seeing him seemingly defeated by his own son only made it more difficult to watch.
From a movie enthusiast’s perspective, wrapping up Dexter: New Blood felt like a rewardingly conclusive end to the series, offering much-needed resolution. However, I can’t help but reflect that while a storyline might be logical, it doesn’t necessarily resonate with every fan’s expectations or desires.
In my opinion, the plot unfolded in a way that felt logical and well-structured. It was far more fulfilling and conclusive than I had anticipated. However, having an appropriate conclusion for a story doesn’t necessarily equate to it being a satisfying ending.
It seems that in the series Dexter: Resurrection, it’s questionable whether Dexter will face consequences for his actions, as viewers appear to be against the idea of him being killed off or incarcerated. However, one might wonder if a conventional happy ending is possible for such a complex character who has endured so much loss and has a thirst for vengeance. It’s doubtful that he could simply ride off into the sunset, as this leaves room for fans to request more. He’s already attempted abstinence from his dark deeds and died before, so what options remain? The writers of Dexter: Resurrection have been involved with the show since its inception, so hopefully they can devise a resolution that is both reasonable and satisfying for viewers.
No matter what transpires, we won’t see that this season on “Dexter: Resurrection.” The show has three seasons planned initially, with potential for more. Whether the writers have decided on Dexter’s final outcome is still uncertain; however, it appears that Hall aims to satisfy the fans.
