Michael J. Fox Criticizes CNN Over ‘Remembering Life’ Video: “Wtf?”

It’s become almost comical how often incorrect news spreads online, especially with social media. We frequently see false reports of deaths, often old obituaries resurfaced and mocked. Celebrity death hoaxes are particularly common, forcing the stars themselves to prove they’re still alive. And then there are the wild conspiracy theories, like the one claiming Avril Lavigne died and was replaced by a look-alike.

Michael J. Fox, the famous star of Back to the Future, was mistakenly reported as deceased by CNN. The network published a video tribute to the actor, who is, in fact, very much alive, and he jokingly asked how people react when they see a news report of their own death.

Answering his own question, Fox humorously wrote on Threads:

So, what do you do when something startling happens? Do you (A) turn on MSNBC, or whatever the channel is called now, (B) accidentally spill hot water on yourself, (C) call your wife for comfort and reassurance, (D) remember it’s an annual occurrence and try to stay calm, or (E) question what just happened and realize it’s probably just you overreacting, and that you’re okay? Love, Mike.

The celebrity news site TMZ reported on a rumor that Michael J. Fox was alive and well, after false reports circulated. Fox’s representatives quickly confirmed he was doing fine and pointed out he had been at a public event, PaleyFest, the day before. While the actor has been privately battling Parkinson’s disease since 1992 and kept a low profile since 2020, he’s recently been doing interviews to promote his appearance on the Apple TV+ show, Shrinking.

Predictably, social media is full of jokes about the recent mistake in the news. CNN has stated that the incorrect story was published by accident, has been taken down, and they apologize to Michael J. Fox and his family. It’s likely the person who mistakenly published the story is now looking for a new job.

Great news about Fox! Let’s celebrate this weekend by watching the Back to the Future movies. We could also revisit some classic Spin City episodes, or for those of us who grew up in the ’80s, relive our childhood with Family Ties and pretend to be Alex P. Keaton. You’re sure to have a good time – enjoy!
