Bill Lawrence explains how Michael J. Fox returned to acting with a role in season 3 of Shrinking. Fox publicly shared his Parkinson’s disease diagnosis in 1998, after receiving it in 1991, and the disease’s progression ultimately led to his retirement from acting in 2020.
Though he briefly retired, Jason Fox returned to acting in May, joining the cast of Shrinking season 3 as a guest star. This isn’t the first time Fox has worked with the show’s co-creator, Bill Lawrence – they previously collaborated on Spin City and Scrubs.
In an interview with TVLine, Jason Segel (Lawrence) explained that Harrison Ford shared with Fox how much he missed acting. This conversation ultimately led to Ford being cast in Shrinking. Segel hinted that Ford isn’t playing a version of himself, but a fully developed character with excellent comedic skills. Ford will appear in multiple episodes of the show. You can find Segel’s full comments below.
He let slip over the summer, while we were out, that he actually missed acting. Given that he’s living with Parkinson’s, I was really impressed and thought it was amazing to see him play a fully developed character with the condition. His comedic timing is still fantastic, and everyone will notice that as soon as the trailer is released.
The second season of Shrinking concluded with Paul (Harrison Ford) delivering a heartfelt speech to his family and friends while facing the challenges of worsening Parkinson’s disease. This storyline, focusing on Paul’s health, provided a fitting and organic way to introduce Michael J. Fox to the show.
Harrison Ford will definitely add both emotional depth and excitement to his role and the show as a whole, but Lawrence also assures us he’ll be very funny. Ford is a sitcom icon, known for shows like Family Ties and Spin City, which makes him a great fit alongside the other comedy stars already cast in Shrinking.
The show stars Harrison Ford, along with Jason Segel, Jessica Williams, Luke Tennie, Michael Urie, Lukita Maxwell, Christa Miller, and Ted McGinley. Guest stars and those with recurring roles include Brett Goldstein, Damon Wayans Jr., Neil Flynn, Heidi Gardner, Kelly Bishop, and Cobie Smulders.
Season 3 of the Apple TV series is adding several new faces, including Jeff Daniels, Candice Bergen, Sherry Cola, and Isabella Gomez, alongside Fox. Daniels will play Jimmy (played by Segel)’s father. Jimmy is a therapist dealing with personal loss and using unique methods in his practice after the death of his wife.
Earlier this year, Michael J. Fox made a brief voice appearance in the popular animated film Zootopia 2. He voiced a character named Michael J. The Fox during a prison scene. This was a quick cameo with just one line, a much smaller role compared to his more substantial part in season 3 of the show Shrinking.
Shrinking season 3 debuts on Apple TV on January 28.
