Michael Mann‘s long-planned film, *Comanche*, is moving forward. The famous director recently shared significant news about the project.
Michael Mann announced at a festival in Lyon that his long-planned Western, *Comanche*, is finally happening. He revealed that Scott Cooper will direct the film. Mann has two screenplays for Westerns, and while he won’t be directing this one himself, he’s producing it and has chosen Cooper to bring it to life. Cooper is known for directing films like *Black Mass* (with Johnny Depp), *Antlers* (with Keri Russell), and *The Pale Blue Eye* (with Christian Bale). He’s currently working on a musical biopic about Bruce Springsteen.
This is the first significant news about Mann’s project, *Comanche*, in quite a while. He first wrote the script with Eric Roth (known for *Dune* and *Mank*) in the early 2000s, but the film never moved forward. While the story is still largely a secret, *Comanche* is based on the true story of Cynthia Ann Parker, a white woman who was taken by the Comanches as a child and lived among them for twenty years before being recaptured by the Texas Rangers.
Michael Mann Is Gearing Up to Shoot Heat 2
Michael Mann has decided to let another director, Cooper, take over Comanche, while he focuses on getting Heat 2 made. At the Lumière Festival, he reiterated his desire to start production soon, though a firm timeline hasn’t been set. Recent reports indicate that Paramount Pictures is now backing Heat 2 after Warner Bros. declined due to budget issues. Jerry Bruckheimer, Scott Stuber, and Nick Nesbitt will also be producers on the film.
While no actors have officially joined the cast of *Heat 2* yet, Leonardo DiCaprio is being considered to play the role of Chris Shiherlis – a character originally played by Val Kilmer in the 1995 film. Adam Driver, Austin Butler, and Bradley Cooper have also expressed interest in the project. The movie, based on Michael Mann’s 2022 novel, will expand on the original story by showing events both before and after the 1995 film. The story will jump between 1988 and 2000, and will focus on the characters of Chris Shiherlis and Vincent Hanna across both time periods, making those roles particularly important.
