The Fast & Furious series began in 2001, and eventually, the main storyline—known as The Fast Saga—will come to an end. It’s uncertain when that will be, especially since Fast & Furious 11 was removed from the planned movie release schedule. However, Michelle Rodriguez seems happy with the planned direction of the final movie, judging by her recent comments about earlier films in the series.
Let me set the stage. Vin Diesel posted a video on Instagram for “Toretto Tuesday” where he was joined Rodriguez, who’s played Letty Ortiz in seven of the Fast & Furious movies. The two of them had just come from dinner together, and Diesel said that towards the end of the meal, he asked Rodriguez how she would “sum up the finale,” or what’s important to her about the finale, in one sentence. She answered:
To bring it back to the integrity that we started with.
Anyone familiar with the Fast & Furious series will understand this point. The movies began as stories about street racing and robberies, but they’ve shifted to focus on over-the-top action, still involving cars, and increasingly ignoring the laws of physics. Just four years ago, in F9, characters Roman and Tej literally went to space in a car to destroy a satellite – a huge change from the original films where they were stealing DVDs in Los Angeles.
The decision to lean into more action and spectacle wasn’t necessarily a mistake. The franchise really took off with Fast Five in 2011, and every Fast & Furious movie since then has been a huge financial success, earning over $700 million worldwide. Furious 7 and The Fate of the Furious even surpassed $1 billion. However, Michelle Rodriguez seems pleased that the upcoming Fast & Furious 11 will return to the series’ more grounded beginnings, a direction Jordana Brewster, who plays Mia Toretto, also supported. You can find a video of Rodriguez and Vin Diesel discussing this below.

It’s still unclear how the series will regain its creative direction, and the unfinished story of Dante Reyes from Fast X still needs to be addressed. However, there’s positive news for Fast & Furious 11. Despite recent rumors that the film might be canceled due to budget concerns, Vin Diesel shared photos and a video with Universal’s marketing head, Michael Moses, who confirmed they’ve found a solution.
Hopefully, we’ll soon hear more specific details about Fast & Furious 11, including when filming will start. While we wait, you can always rewatch the original The Fast and the Furious on Netflix to remember where this exciting series began.
