Microsoft is giving the Paint app on Windows 11 a big upgrade! Now, you can save your images as projects, similar to how Photoshop works. This means you can start a picture, save it, and come back to edit it later without losing your progress.
Paint is getting a new feature that lets you save your work as .paint files. This means you can continue editing projects with multiple layers, similar to how it works in Photoshop. According to Dave Grochocki, a Product Manager at Microsoft, “You can now save your creations as editable Paint project files and easily resume working on them later.”
Microsoft Paint has been getting a lot of improvements lately, aiming to make it a strong, cost-free option compared to professional software like Adobe Photoshop. For a long time, Paint felt outdated, but recent updates over the past few years have completely changed that, making it a genuinely useful application.

Paint is getting an update that lets you adjust how see-through your pencil and brush strokes are with a new opacity slider. This builds on existing features like layers and full transparency support that are already available.
It’s great that Microsoft is still improving Paint with new features. For a lot of people who only need to make simple changes to photos or images, Paint now works really well and makes those tasks easy.
The latest version of Paint is currently being tested by Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels. We plan to release it to everyone in the next few weeks.
