Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, recently discussed the company’s gaming strategy. In an interview with TBPN, he explained that Microsoft wants to make games from Xbox Game Studios available on many different platforms, similar to how Microsoft Office can be used on various operating systems and through a web browser.
Now that we’ve completed the Activision deal, we’re the leading gaming publisher and want to deliver a great experience for players, much like what we’ve done with Office. Our goal is to be available on all platforms – consoles, PCs, mobile devices, cloud gaming services, and even TVs – ensuring gamers everywhere can enjoy our games, according to Nadella (as reported by Game File).
Microsoft’s biggest gaming success remains the Windows operating system, Nadella explained, while acknowledging that Valve’s Steam platform has created a huge market for PC games. He also mentioned Microsoft’s desire to push boundaries and create innovative hardware for both consoles and PCs.
He found it amusing that people often see consoles and PCs as completely separate. The original goal when creating the console was actually to create a superior gaming PC, and he believes it’s time to reconsider that initial idea.
As a gamer, I truly believe the console experience is just unbeatable. It consistently delivers incredible performance, and honestly, it feels like it’s what drives innovation in gaming. That’s why Satya Nadella thinks we might even see some totally new kinds of interactive experiences coming soon – things beyond what we’re used to!
This new development is driven by the fact that games are competing for people’s free time with short-form videos on platforms like TikTok. He argues that the gaming industry can only truly innovate when it’s financially healthy, as that provides the necessary funding for new ideas.
Satya Nadella explained that the real competition for gaming isn’t other games themselves, but rather platforms like short-form video. He emphasized that the gaming industry needs to constantly innovate in areas like content creation, delivery, and business models, and that healthy profit margins are crucial for funding that innovation.
Mike Ybarra, a former executive at Microsoft, recently shared his thoughts online, pointing out that gaming isn’t really a competitor to short-form videos. Instead, he believes gaming competes for people’s free time, and should be considered a completely different form of entertainment.
Satya Nadella’s comments align with what Matt Booty mentioned earlier this week: gaming now competes with platforms like TikTok. This point was made following the announcement that Halo: Combat Evolved will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
During a recent appearance on the TBPN tech show, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella discussed his vision for the company’s gaming strategy. He explained that Microsoft aims to make its games available on all platforms, similar to how Microsoft Office is widely accessible. Nadella also suggested they’re rethinking the traditional console versus PC gaming model, emphasizing that strong profit margins are key to driving innovation.
