After recently changing and raising the price of Game Pass, Microsoft was rumored to be planning a free version of Xbox Cloud Gaming supported by advertisements. A company representative has now confirmed to The New York Times that they have been testing this ad-supported option internally.
This new game tier offers free cloud access with ads, and it’s separate from the Game Pass subscription. Details about when it will launch and how often ads will appear haven’t been released. Reports suggest players will be able to play for one hour at a time, with a total of five free hours per month, and each session will include about two minutes of unskippable ads at the beginning.
Microsoft is planning to release a public beta version of its new service, similar to how it launched Project xCloud, before officially releasing it a few months later. Initially, the service will only support a limited number of Microsoft-owned games, but players will be able to enjoy Xbox Retro Classics and participate in Free Play Days on a variety of devices, including PCs, Xbox consoles, web browsers, and handhelds like the ROG Ally and Ally X.
