Microsoft has identified two problems in the latest preview update for Windows 11, released on December 1, 2025. While this update includes several improvements – like a better Dark Mode for File Explorer, expanded full-screen support for Xbox, and enhancements to the Widget Board – these issues have been noted by the company.
I’ve discovered a frustrating new issue with the latest update. It seems that when File Explorer is used in dark mode, the screen now briefly flashes white each time it opens. It’s a quick flash, but definitely noticeable and a bit jarring for users who prefer the dark theme.
After installing update KB5070311, some users may see a temporary white flash when opening File Explorer if they’re using dark mode. The screen will quickly show a blank white color before the files and folders appear. This issue occurs each time File Explorer is opened.
- Navigate to or from Home or Gallery (including launching to Home)
- Create a new tab
- Turn the Details pane on or off
- Select More details while copying files

Okay, so I’ve been testing File Explorer, and I’ve noticed this annoying white flash every time it opens. It’s quick – only about a second – but honestly, if you’re working in a dark room with dark mode enabled for a while, it’s a bit jarring and can really catch your eye. It’s definitely not ideal, and something I hope gets fixed soon.
Microsoft has identified another problem with the recent KB5071142 update. Some users may find that the icons for choosing how to sign in (like typing a password or using a PIN) are hidden on the lock screen. If you use multiple sign-in options, the password entry field might not be visible, though it still works.
As a researcher testing the lock screen, I’ve observed that the password icon sometimes doesn’t immediately appear in the sign-in options. However, I discovered that the password button is still functional – if you move your mouse over where the icon *should* be, it highlights, allowing you to click and open the password field. Once the field appears, you can enter your password and sign in as usual.
The company acknowledges these problems and is developing a solution. However, for users who’ve already installed update KB5071142, the only current fix is to uninstall it. It’s concerning that significant issues like these made it into a public Windows update without being identified earlier through the Windows Insider Preview program.
It’s unfortunate this update has issues, because KB5071142 is a significant improvement overall. It includes useful enhancements like improved haptic feedback for pens when using window snapping and hovering over app controls, a redesigned File Explorer context menu that’s simpler to use, and other general improvements to the operating system.
