Microsoft integrates Copilot with the Taskbar on Windows 11 — the search box is now an AI chat box

Microsoft is updating Windows 11 to replace the current search box on the taskbar with a Copilot chat window. According to Microsoft, this change aims to make the taskbar more helpful and efficient, turning everyday tasks into more productive and enjoyable experiences.

Initially, you’ll need to actively choose to try the new Copilot feature within the Taskbar search. Once enabled, it will completely change the Windows Search window into a new Copilot interface. This interface will handle both AI-powered chats and searches for files and apps on your computer. Microsoft assures users that Copilot won’t automatically access your apps or files; it uses the existing Windows Search technology to find results.

We’ve made it faster and easier to use Copilot throughout Windows by adding it to the Taskbar. Now, no matter what you’re doing, you can quickly get to Copilot – including features like Copilot Vision and chat – with just a click.

The latest Copilot features are rolling out to all Windows 11 users, not just those with newer Copilot+ PCs. Microsoft recently announced a wide range of improvements that everyone can enjoy, no matter what kind of computer they have.

We’re adding a smarter AI assistant to Copilot. Soon, it will be able to work directly with apps and files on your Windows PC, using a new technology called Copilot Actions. This means Copilot can actually *do* things for you – completing tasks and taking actions on your behalf.

Microsoft plans to release a preview of the new Copilot feature on the Windows Taskbar to Windows Insiders within the next few weeks. However, it’s expected that the full release for all Windows 11 users won’t happen until sometime in 2026.
