Microsoft is Reportedly Working on a Cheaper, Cloud-Based Game Pass Tier

As a long-time gamer and an avid Xbox user, I have to admit that Microsoft’s recent announcement about Game Pass has left me feeling a bit confused and frustrated. I’ve grown accustomed to the convenience of having access to a vast library of games for one monthly fee with the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription. But now, with the removal of the base console tier and the rumors of new tiers on the horizon, I can’t help but wonder where this is all headed.

I was excitedly following Microsoft’s news earlier this month when they revealed some updates for Xbox Game Pass. Along with increasing prices and eliminating the base console tier for new subscribers, they were also replacing it with a new standard version that wouldn’t offer day one releases. This change was quite notable, but it looks like Microsoft might have more surprises in store for us.

According to a recent report from Windows Central, Microsoft may be developing a more affordable version of Xbox Game Pass. This new tier is said to be cloud-based, meaning it could provide an alternative to the more expensive Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

According to reports, the cloud-only version of Game Pass is intended for individuals who don’t have an Xbox console yet. This tier might even include access to games from competing platforms. It’s also rumored that users can buy individual games from the Game Pass library while subscribed to this new tier.

Furthermore, the report suggests that Microsoft is thinking about offering a “friends and family” plan for Game Pass, based on previous experiments in certain areas. However, this isn’t an active project at the moment. Additionally, there are rumors that Microsoft is looking into tiered subscriptions with ads included. But this is not currently under development.

Currently, Microsoft hasn’t specified a release date for allowing new console subscribers to access Xbox Game Pass Standard. Therefore, it’s unlikely that any information regarding new Game Pass tier options will surface soon.
